No Need to Get Fruity

When Cameron was in mixed red's land, let my Cameron go.

"Hello. May I help you?"

You can sure as hell try. Hi. I'm Cameron Hughes. Mixed reds, three. Case of 6.

"You're Cameron Hughes?"

That's right. I'm Cameron Hughes.

"The Field Blend of California?"

Yeah. That's me. I'm also the Mendoza Malbec of Argentina and the Lodi of Zinfandel.

"Listen, young wine. Entre nous, I'm very busy here. Why don't you take the grapes and go back to the vineyard?"

Are you suggesting that I don't have a deep violet color and aromas of cherry and plum?

"I'm suggesting that you leave before I have to get fruity."

Fruity?

"Fruity."

Fruity?

"Listen young wine, either you take the field blend outside, or I'm going to have to call the sommelier."

Fine. As a matter of fact, I'll call him myself.

"I've had enough of this horsing around. Give me the wine opener back."

You touch me, I yell sexy fruit bomb. There's another wine opener around here, find it.

"Wonderful. I weep for the future of wine making."

Psst. Ma'am. When the maitre d' comes back with the sommelier, ask for the Cameron Hughes.

"Bonjour, Madam. How can I help you?"

May I please have a glass of Cameron Hughes, the Field Blend of California?

"Cameron Hughes? Let me check the restaurant. Can you describe it for me, please?"

Silky tannins. Smokey nose, concentrated palate. Devastatingly multifaceted.

"Ergh … yes, Ma'am. Right away."

2010 Cameron Hughes Lot 321 California Field Blend 750ml 2-Pack
  • Appellation: California 100%
  • Grape: Zinfandel 78%, Petite Sirah 13%, Carignane 6%, Mourvedre 3%
  • Alcohol by volume: 14.5%
  • Production: 6,800
  • Drink/Hold: Now through 2015

Field Blends are the result of a certain way of propagating vineyards in early 20th century California Viticulture wherein various vines were planted in a vineyard and the underperformers had their heads lopped off to be replaced by budwood from the best performers. Trial and Error or Darwinianism at its best if you will. Lot 321 is a fanciful interpretation of this technique but the result is anything but. Lot 321, combines Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Syrah and Carignane, is an exercise in gorgeously fruited, yet well structured wine that is a good reflection of the dirt from which it hails. This wine is the best of the old-world and the new, the classic and the updated…Purity of essence if you will. A phenomenal buy.

2011 Cameron Hughes Lot 358 Mendoza Malbec, Argentina 750ml 2-Pack

  • Alcohol: 13.9%
  • Vintage: 2011
  • Appellation: Mendoza 100%
  • Grape: Malbec 100%
  • Alcohol: 13.9%
  • Production: 6,000
  • Drink/Hold: Now through 2021

This is a winery that Cameron Hughes is very fortunate to be partnered with and also produced Lot 258 & 275 Reserva Malbec for them. They boast beautiful vineyards with excellent terroir and impeccable wine-making practices. This is some of their top-tier wine and it shows. 55% of the berries come from a vineyard located in Agrelo, planted in 1994 and managed with vertical trellising. The other 45% come from a vineyard located in the Uco Valley planted in 1992 and managed with vertical trellising. They sit is beautiful soil, Deep silty base, and rocky in depth, with good drainage. It's aged for 12 months, 80% French oak and 20% American oak barrels.

2010 Cameron Hughes Lot 291 Lodi Zinfandel 750ml 2-Pack

  • Appellation: Lodi 100%
  • Alcohol: 15%
  • Production: 5000
  • Drink/Hold: Now and through 2019

Lot 291 is the result of a vineyard and winery partnership with one of Lodi's best growers. Effectively, grapes are farmed to Cameron Hughes' specifications, sold to a winery and made under their winemaker's guidance by the winery. A famous and very high-end Zinfandel and Petite Sirah brand sources one half of this particular vineyard and sells the wine for $40/bottle, Cameron Hughes buys the other half of the vineyard and sell the wines for under $14. Sure, they crop theirs in at two tons to the acre versus their four and they use a higher percentage of new oak but, beyond that, there isn't much difference. Cameron Hughes is doing the same deal out of 2010 and extremely excited about this model of making wines and creating exceptional value.
