Sense of Site
When wine tastes like it could come from anywhere, it might as well come from nowhere. Broc Cellars don’t play that. Their 2008 Grenache positively sings of the Bennett Valley AVA, with aromas of kirsch, clove, black currant, and pepper balancing out the red fruit character for a flavor that could only come from where it comes from.
But why this cooler, rockier corner of Sonoma instead of the bigger-name AVAs thereabouts? Y’see, Broc Cellars believes that, as with people, a little hardship brings out the best in grapevines. And, as with Tolstoy’s unhappy families, every struggling grapevine struggles in its own way. The result is a wine that reflects its birthplace as faithfully as a mirror.
By the time Chris Brockway and crew finish ministering to this Grenache in their urban winery in Berkeley, it’s practically got a BENNETT VALLEY 4 LIFE tattoo on its bicep. Exotic, elegant, focused, and restrained, the 2008 Broc Cellars Grenache doesn’t just put Bennett Valley on the map – it pretty much IS a map.
