Let it gris.

Pinot Gris was a favorite of Holy Roman Emperor Charles the IV, so you're obviously a lot like him. Check out what else you have in common:

  • Charles IV was the king of Bohemia from August 26th, 1346 to November 29th, 1378. You were the Student Body Treasurer from Sept. 19th, 1980 to March 3rd, 1981.
  • Charles IV was the victim of an estate contract conspiracy plot devised by Casimir III, Otto V, and Louis I. Your children once conspired to sneak into the kitchen while you were asleep.
  • Charles IV brought peace-keeping policies to his states of the empire. You brought potato salad to your family reunion.
  • Charles IV was responsible for the creation and expansion of "New Bohemia" by leveraging his magisterial might. You were responsible for the performance of "Bohemian Rhapsody" at a Milwaukee karaoke bar by leveraging Bud Light.
  • Charles IV won his throne in 1349. You won KerPlunk in 1989.
  • Charles IV was married four times. You came fourth in your office's Fantasy Football league.
  • Charles IV's nephew was Charles V, who grew up to become the King of France. You took your nephew to the zoo, where he promptly took off his pants.

Barber Cellars is dedicated to single vineyard, hand crafted, high quality wines.

2012 Chimaera Pinot Gris, Sonoma Mountain, Sonoma County 750ml 6-Pack

Our Pinot Gris comes from the Morning Sun Vineyard of Sonoma Mountain, a sustainably farmed vineyard high on a ridge top in the Sonoma Mountain AVA rich in volcanic soils.  After picking, the grapes were crushed and left on the skins for 4 hours before being pressed.  The wine was then fermented in stainless steel on the lees for 5 months with lees stirring before being blended with 15% Marsanne to increase its brightness and floral component.  The result is a lush and floral wine with a beautiful copper color and excellent mouthfeel.

This is a rich Pinot Gris with flavors of papaya, rose, grapefruit and a sharp minerality from the soils of the mountain vineyard.  This savory white is perfect with soft cheeses, poultry, seafood, light but savory dishes, and summer time!

Vendor Details

Barber Cellars

Owners:
Michael & Lorraine Barber
Founded:
2007
Location:
Santa Rosa, Sonoma County

Barber Cellars was established to produce high quality, hand crafted, and truly unique wines from the best grapes that Sonoma’s appellations have to offer.  The winery only uses hand picked grapes from organically or sustainably farmed vineyards, makes no unnatural additions or manipulations to their wines, and uses as little sulfur as possible.

Michael Barber started making wine with his wife, Lorraine, in 2005.  He taught himself commercial wine making by reading through the UC Davis course books while making wine at home and asking advice from winemakers and colleagues he met while working for one of the largest and most respected wine retailers in San Francisco.  Here he had the opportunity to taste all the great wines of the world and establish relationships with some of the best winegrowers of Sonoma County.  After making friends with several east bay vintners, he was given the tools and knowledge necessary to take his winemaking to the commercial level.

Michael wanted to create classic California wines with old world sensibilities - delicious wines of elegance and complexity.  His wines honestly showcase the differences of individual terroirs and individual vintages with fruit from small lots of single vineyards.  Barber Cellars wines are unique, balanced, affordable, and food friendly wines from Sonoma County fruit.

There is a saying in this industry that goes “In the wine business, you start with a large fortune to make a small fortune.”  Mike and Lorraine started Barber Cellars with no fortune at all, but have dedicated their lives to the pursuit of great and memorable California wine.  Their first commercial vintage was 2007, pressed, fermented, and bottled at a Suisun City winery close to San Francisco.  Their wines were immediately welled received with media and consumer praise in everything from the SF Chronicle to Wine Enthusiast Magazine.  They are currently 100% Sonoma - living in Petaluma, and making all their wines in Santa Rosa from Sonoma Mountain and Sonoma Coast vineyards.
