hello again.

Well. It's March. Spring is encroaching (perhaps a more optimistic person would say "approaching"). On the one hand, it brings revival and new life. On the other hand, allergies. Anyway, enjoy our offerings here.

Features

2012 Zinsane Zinfandel, Lodi 750ml 6-Pack

Zinsane is the wild and crazy idea that Zinfandel should not be an alcoholic, fat, clumsy, ugly or out of control wine, just well balanced. It is exuberant and delicious and enthusiastically looking to solve your wine choice dilemma. Zinsane Zinfandel is fun, delicious and just a little bit crazy.

On the palate a riot of berry fruit and spicy flavors conclude in a long, warming finish. This juicy red would be perfect with grilled fare, casseroles, meaty pasta dishes or your favorite pizza. Or, when any occasion requires good friends and a big laugh.

Zinfandel – America’s adopted grape (from its distant Italian cousin, PRIMATIVO) made its way to the USA in the 19th century, though no one is really sure why it’s name changed. We even checked records at Ellis Island and there was nothing to be found!

Vineyard Info/Region: Our 2012 Zinsane is grown in the Central Valley of California, a region that has seen much success over the past few years in cultivating expressive and balanced Zinfandel. Vineyards are situated amongst the rolling hills of Lodi, with warm, dry summers and relatively cool winters, Zinfandel thrives in this region. Such warm days attribute to a more fruit forward style, with bold fruit characteristics and dynamic flavor profiles. Wet winters, with ample rain flow through the spring maintain the balance necessary to o“ffset such warm days during the summer months and allow such a balanced wine.

Winemaking/Vintage: In Lodi, the 2012 vintage all came down to the last few weeks of harvest. After early scares of frost in January and late rains in June and July, September’s weather was even and mellow. While some producers were picking pockets of Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon side by side in early September, the calming weather pattern allowed producers to leave most of their later ripening red varietals on the vine longer.

The less vigorous canopies, partly a result of the small crop sizes of 2010 and 2011, stressed the vines earlier and jumpstarted the ripening process for red varietals earlier than usual. For the first time in many years, producers were picking Zinfandel later than Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Independent of when the grapes were picked, what was picked ended up being ripe, concentrated fruit with higher than average acidity. It may have not gone as planned, but 2012 in Lodi ended as one of the best vintages in recent times.
