2011 Central Coast Red Wine 750ml 2-Pack
Ah, the varietal that dare not speak its name; even before it was maligned in a cheesy film, “Cabernet Lite” had become so overproduced and watered down that most wine lovers, not to mention independent winemakers, had lost interest in the variety. And yet, when cropped down to two bottles per vine (that’s Stillman Brown's consumer-friendly translation of tons per acre) it can make a stunning wine. In this case, the cropping was done by nature: the freeze of spring 2011 in Paso Robles. Eight months in two new 69 gallon French oak barrels (yes, they were expensive) and topping from some of Zeppelin Winery's other best lots, has made a silky yet beefy wine with more structure and concentration in one bottle than in a full case of grocery store Merlot. It’s in a Burgundy bottle, the better to fool our sommelier enemies and your friends, if you wish. Nobody’s figured it out yet, by the way.

Zeppelin Winery is a very small producer of super premium wines, based on the Central Coast of California. Founded in 2009 by winemaker Stillman Brown of Red Zeppelin Winery and wine veteran Dan Lewis (he's the office guy) we produce tiny lots of Syrah and other misunderstood varietals, with almost invariably insane labels. Most can only be purchased directly, but once in a while they emerge into the light of day.
