Zahtila the Hun

This wine is so good it's barbaric. We know that doesn't make any sense. Just go with it.

Fearless is this Cabernet. It takes no prisoners. It'll plunder your next dinner party without apologies, trampling canapés and smashing 100% French oak barrels over the heads of your guests, figuratively of course. Before you even have time to register it, this ruthless conqueror is belting out its battle cry, "CHERRRRYYYY!" and leaving you in a wake of sweet vanilla.

And just when you think you can take no more, the Zinfandel sweeps in like an angel of mercy. But do not be fooled. At first it may appear soft and supple with reserved tannin. Be wary, however, for bramble is a cunning spice. And this wine doth have the bramble! So much bramble, in fact, that women cry and small children … oh forget it. We can't keep this up.

The only thing scary about this wine is how good it is. You should buy some. Thank you for your time.

Features

2007 Calistoga Cabernet Sauvignon, “Barlow Vineyards” 750ml

The first release from Barlow Vineyards, this wine just about yells out CHERRY!  Black cherry, some sour cherry, just cherry!  Framed with sweet vanilla from 100% French oak barrels, 40% of them new.   This wine has rich, bold tannins that maintain a fruit forward, food friendly nature.  Drink now or hold for 5, 10, 15 years.

2007 Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel 750ml

Bramble equals spice and this wine has the bramble!  The nose exudes red berry, black cherry and a hit of rum raisin.  The palette is soft and supple with reserved tannin.  Aged in 100% American oak barrels, 30% new.  This is a very food friendly wine with structure for cellaring until 2014.

Vendor Details

Zahtila Vineyards

Founded:
1999
Owner:
Laura Zahtila Swanton
Location:
Calistoga, CA
Laura Zahtila Swanton knows the many challenges of establishing a boutique winery dedicated to crafting small quantities of fine wine in the Napa Valley. She has experienced them all in her demanding, yet delicious, journey from fledging winery to award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel producer.

A long-time wine enthusiast, Owner and Proprietor Laura Zahtila Swanton purchased the Calistoga winery estate that would become Zahtila Vineyards from the Traulsen family in 1999. At the time, Laura was a sales specialist with Cisco Systems in San Jose. It was a career that required intimate knowledge of high-tech product application. Knowing how the technology worked was critical to her success in selling the product.

Today, Laura's tenacity for learning systems and science is directed at running her small winery and vineyard estate dedicated to limited-production, premium red wines. Since 1999, Laura has managed all winemaking processes from grape sourcing to the logistics of launching and operating a winery. Her zeal to understand winegrowing at its root has her pruning, picking, irrigating and collecting soil samples in the vineyard. A thirst for winemaking knowledge encourages her participation in crush, pump-overs, racking and bottling.

"I do it all," says Laura. "It's so important that I work alongside every member of the Zahtila team from the temporary harvest help to my associate winemaker. I'm not one to stand on the sidelines, and fortunately because we are as small as we are, I can be actively involved in every aspect of this business."
