Rousseau Good

It's finally happened. It was inevitable. You run into Oz Clarke at a party.

And you're drinking this rando white wine … what's it called? Columbo? It tastes fine, but you know nothing about it.

But you want to impress Oz, because he's on TV and he's got that intimidating accent.

"What do you think?" He asks, pointing to your glass.

Your hands are clammy. Your eyes dart around. You need time. You need a hero. Suddenly, another British voice murmurs in your ear:

Tell him you love its acidity.

What? How? Who?

Obviously, a six-inch tall James May sitting on your shoulder. Obviously.

Only you can see me, James tells you.

Meanwhile, Oz asks if you know anything about Colombard.

It's the offspring of Chenin blanc and Gouais blanc. May tugs at your earlobe. You repeat the factoid. Oz nods approvingly. May continues telling you what to say. You recite vacantly:

"And it was grown in France for Cognac. And Arm and Hammer. Er, I mean Armagnac." Good save.

Bad news, friends. There will never been a miniature James May perched on our shoulders. Nobody's around to whisper the answers in our ears.

But at least we have the grape.

Features

2012 Y Rousseau Old Vines Colombard, Russian River Valley 750ml 6-Pack

The Renaissance of Colombard!

Colombard is a varietal originally from the Southwest of France where it has been grown for hundreds of years. Yannick made his first Colombard in 1996 in the heart of Gascony. The grapes for Y Rousseau Old Vines Colombard come from the last Colombard vines planted in the Russian River Valley. Yannick chose to make this wine because of its unique character and to bring a slice of Gascony to American wine lovers.

The Colombard 2012 displays intense stony and crystalline minerality. It is a refreshing wine showcasing aromas and flavors of grapefruit, Anjou pear, green tea, lemongrass and lime. This vintage is truly a reflection of the unique terroir and old, dry farmed vines. With its medium body, delicate texture and its crisp minerality, this is a great summertime wine.

Y Rousseau Wines is the realization of a dream that began long ago in France and evolved as Yannick Rousseau, founder and winemaker, followed his heart and passion to live the 'Joie de Vivre' he learned at home.

Yannick was born in the Gascony region in the Southwest of France known for its 'French paradox' of delicious, rich food, daily wine consumption and impressive longevity of the inhabitants. His life-long journey in wine and food started when he was 5 years old and drank his first glass of homemade wine with Pépé (his grandpa). Pépé hunted his own food, made his own wine, and was an artisan butcher. Everyday, Yannick lived the simple life where his family took the time to enjoy their food, wines and the company of family and friends.

In 1996, Yannick made his first Colombard at Domaine St Lannes in the "Cotes de Gascogne". He also worked as assistant winemaker at Chateau Montus and Domaine Bouscassé with Alain Brumont, pioneer for the finest wines made in the Madiran appellation. In 1998, Yannick earned a Master's degree in Enology and Viticulture from University Paul Sabatier in Toulouse.

Since 1999, Yannick has been working his craft in Napa Valley making award winning wines; first, at Newton Vineyards as assistant winemaker where he worked closely with winemaker, Luc Morlet and consulting winemaker, Michel Rolland. Then at Chateau Potelle Winery, 2001-2006. Yannick was pivotal in crafting the cult VGS wines from Mount Veeder. It was his deft hand that guided the creation of consistently rewarded VGS wines. Marketta Fourmeaux, owner and winemaker, invited Yannick back as consultant winemaker for Chateau Potelle in 2006-2007.

In August 2007, Yannick stepped out to look for the ideal vineyards and varietals he believed in. He loves the intense mountain fruit of Mount Veeder and he found one of the last (34 year old) Colombard vineyard in Russian River Valley. The rest of the story is in the wines!
