Making a mountain out of a Winter Hill

My other wine cellar is a thousand-meter elevator.

Storing wine at the appropriate temperature is vital. High temperatures accelerate aging while low temperatures ruin the flavors. A lot of people age their wines in "cellars" or temperature-controlled refrigerators. But I came up with an even better idea: Storing my wine collection at 3000 ft.

I was inspired by the Winter's Hill Pinot Noir. The name made me realize that topographical features such as mountains and hills contain their own micro-climates -- perfect for aging wine! I wasn't about to buy an entire mountain, so instead I made this "wine elevator."

Let me show you how it works. Jump on in the basket with me, and watch the block-and-tackle over your head. Now, grab this rope and start hoisting. Hoist! The temperature change will be gradual, and you probably won't notice it as you work up a sweat yanking on that rope. But at 1000 ft. the ambient air temperature will start to drop. Mmmmm. Brisk.

Here we are -- my wine collection in the sky. It took a lot of scaffolding, but now it's the highest man-made structure in the world! So that's kind of cool. But what's really COOL is the wine. Let's crack open a bottle of Pinot Noir. But be careful not to drink too much - the altitude got to the last guy I brought up here, and let's just say he took a TRIP and had a nice FALL.

Winter's Hill Vineyard

Founded:
1961
Owner:
The Gladhart family
Location:
Dundee Hills, OR
Winter's Hill Vineyard is an Estate winery located in the Dundee Hills of Oregon. The Gladhart family owns and operates Winter's Hill, from managing the vineyard and the rest of our farm, to making our wines, to greeting you in the tasting room when you come to visit.

Thirty-five acres of vineyards are nestled into a 150 acre farm including fir and oak forests. Farming this land is a privilege, and we have followed sustainable farming practices since Peter and Emily Gladhart planted our first vines in 1990. We are certified by LIVE and SalmonSafe in recognition of our efforts.

The first wines bearing our name were 298 cases of 1998 Pinot Noir. Our production has grown slowly and steadily as wine lovers in the Northwest and around the country have discovered our Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and dessert wines such as our Golden Nectar. In 2004 Delphine and Russell joined the family partnership, with Delphine taking on the duties of Winemaker.

Today the third generation is developing the farm established in 1961. Together with our employees, we manage our vineyards, fields, and forests for the long term benefit of our family and our community. We are proud to share our wine and our land with our customers and visitors, and we look forward to your next visit.
