The Best Revenge Is Living Wellington

Peter Wellington, you shouldn’t have. You already give us insight and wit by the barrel every couple of weeks in your Random Ramblings of a Weary Winemaker column, bringing wine.wooters unprecedented glimpses into the enological lifestyle. You don’t even ask any payment in return. Under your Wine.Woot username SonomaBouliste, you’ve been one of the most valuable participants on our message boards. And now you want to offer two of your choicest wines at a scandalously low price like this? We couldn’t possibly accept.

Just stop and think about what you’re doing for a minute. Why on Earth would you let your Wellington Vineyards 2002 Reserve Syrah go for such a pittance? You’ve said yourself that this is one of the finest Syrahs you’ve made since you started making the varietal in 1993. We’re talking about a Sonoma Valley Syrah that scored 90 points from Wine Enthusiast and won the Gold medal at the 2006 Sonoma County Harvest Fair. You know better than anybody that it wasn’t easy to produce such fleshy, intense flavor. How many meticulous tastings and trial blends did you try? How much thought did you put into how to firm up and focus this Syrah before you decided to add a splash of Cabernet Sauvignon? And now you just want to peddle it cheap on Wine.Woot like so much common rotgut?

There’s such a thing as being too generous, you know.

Or take the Wellington Vineyards 2004 Victory Reserve. You don’t just slap the “Reserve” label on any old bottle of whatever. 2004 marked only the fifth time in 16 years that you bottled Victory. It took a lot of tasting and mixing and re-tasting and re-mixing to arrive at this exquisitely proportioned blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. Take a whiff of that basketful of aromas: black cherry, rustic cedar, vibrant vanilla, perfumy violets, spicy pepper. Luxuriate in that smooth, supple entry and rich palate, that firm finish, the unlimited potential of this wine after a bit of cellaring…It’s only going to get…more…delicious…

Er, on second thought, you know, who are we to tell you what to do? You’re a grown man. If you want to clear some space on your top shelf, we’re not going to stand in your way. If you really insist on offering this cleanup-hitting two-pack at a utility infielder price, we’ll go along with it. As a favor to you, you understand. Just this once. Hey, have you seen our credit card?
