Drink Wine All The Time

Variety packs are the spice of life.

Remember how much fun it was as a kid to get variety packs? Who would want one flavor when you could have SIX? The fine people at Wellington Vineyards have taken the same line of reasoning and applied it to their wines. Now there’s a vintage for every day of the week!

Monday - Start your week off right with a glass of the 2008 England Crest Syrah. This has smoky, bacony notes, and nothing makes you feel energized and ready to take on the week like bacon.

Tuesday - Ugh. Tuesday. You’re still easing into the week, so a 2008 Sonoma Valley Zinfandel is the way to go. Smooth and fruity, this is an easy one to drink.

Wednesday - Alright, the week’s in full swing, and you’re ready for something with a little more kick. The 2008 Sonoma County Cab Sauv is just what the doctor ordered. With lively acid and a chewy finish, it’s the perfect way to say “I don’t care if you’re only halfway done, week! Bring it on!”

Thursday - So the week took you up on your offer and brought it on. It’s time to beat those Thursday Blues by breaking into the 2008 Mohrhardt Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon. Two Cab Sauvs in a row? It’s been that kind of week. The intense aroma has mulberry, cassis, cranberry, cocoa, smoke, rhubarb, clove, leather, spices and herbs - your olfactory nerves will be so overwhelmed that you’ll soon forget all your worries..

Friday - It’s the end of the week, and that can only mean one thing - The Duke is in town. Plop down for some burgers and pizza to go along with this bad boy, and just unwind.

Saturday - Nothing like a mouth-coating 2009 Merlot to waste away the Saturday with. Whether enjoying it with or as a meal, this is the perfect way to enjoy your day off.

Sunday - It’s been a long week, and you have a pretty nasty headache for some inexplicable reason. Maybe you should take the day off... or drink all six at once!

Features

2008 Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma County 750ml 2-Pack

In 2008, Wellington's Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon again has Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc in the blend.  They use both of these traditional Bordeaux grapes in their Victory Reserve, and also do blending trials to see if they will improve their Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot.  Youthful medium dark red color. Aromas of black currant and cherry with notes of mocha, cedar, caramel, black pepper and spice.  The oak is well integrated and not overpowering.  The entry is full and supple without being overly sweet or heavy, the mid-palate fruity with lively acid; the finish a bit chewy still, with lingering fruit and oak.  With over 2 years of bottle age, this wine already has a smooth, long finish, but still has the stuffing to evolve for several years.

2009 Merlot 750ml 2-Pack

The Wellington Merlot is frequently referred to as a "Cab lover's Merlot," but this is somewhat less so in the 2009 vintage.  Classic Merlot aromas of cherry, allspice and tea dominate, with nuances of licorice, tarragon and black pepper adding complexity.  The entry is rich, plush and mouth-coating, with bright acid and soft tannins leading to a long, lingering finish with licorice and spice in the aftertaste.  This wine has the versatility to complement many foods or to enjoy by itself.

2008 Syrah, England Crest 750ml 2-Pack

Aromas: blackberry and blueberry, with unmistakable Syrah smoky / gamy / bacony notes.  Lush, full and round, with enough chewy tannin to ensure several more years of life.

The Duke 750ml 2-Pack

This is a medium bodied red with enough acid and tannin to make it a good match for burgers, pizza, stews, etc.  The dominant primary aromas are blackberry, raspberry and cherry fruit, with notes of licorice, sage, sandalwood and brown spices.

2008 Mohrhardt Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml 2-Pack

Mohrhardt Ridge (pronounced "more heart") is only five miles from the Pacific Ocean, in the new Ft. Ross - Seaview appellation, a very cool site for Cabernet Sauvignon.  The wine from here has a consistent, unique character year after year, regardless of vintage.  Wine reviewers have commented (more than once) that the Mohrhardt Ridge Cabernet is reminiscent of a St. Estephe (the coolest of the major Bordeaux communes). The intense aroma is kind of hard to describe, but has mulberry , cassis and cranberry fruit, with notes of cocoa, smoke, rhubarb, clove, leather, spices and herbs (marjoram?).  The entry is sweet, the texture walks the line between firm and velvety - smooth without being soft.  Enjoyable now, but certainly has all the right stuff to age for 5-7 more years.

2008 Zinfandel, Sonoma Valley 750ml 2-Pack

Raspberry, rhubarb, black pepper and cola aromas.  Smooth and fruity, easy drinking.

Vendor Details

Wellington Vineyards

Founded:
1986
Owner:
Peter Wellington
Location:
Glen Ellen, CA
Wellington Vineyards is owned Peter Wellington. Peter's father John purchased the winery site in 1986. At the time, it consisted of 20 acres of old vines and a few decrepit old fruit and nut trees. Replanting of part of the old vineyard and orchard started in 1988. The winery was completed in time for the 1989 crush. We grow approximately half the grapes we use and purchase the remainder, primarily from small, unique vineyards.

The estate vineyards consist of 21 acres, 8 of which are 85 to 117 years old. There are 24 different varieties in the old vineyard, with the most common being Zinfandel, Carignan, Alicante Bouschet, Grenache and Syrah. In addition, there are 10 acres of eleven to sixteen year old vines that consist of Merlot, Chardonnay, Marsanne, and Syrah. We grow more Merlot than anything else. Three more acres were replanted in 2001, predominantly to Syrah, Zinfandel and Grenache.
