2013 Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma County
Our Sonoma County blend is produced and blended in the house style, but with a little extra attention to balance and early drinkability. We sell a lot of this wine to restaurants that don’t have the space or financial capability to age wines. Youthful medium dark red color. Aromas of black currant and cherry with notes of licorice, mint, mocha, cedar, caramel, violets, marjoram and brown spices.  The oak is well integrated and not overpowering.  The entry is full and supple without being overly sweet or heavy, the mid-palate fruity with lively acid; the finish a bit chewy still, with lingering fruit and oak.  With a full 2 years of bottle age, this wine already has a smooth, long finish, but still has the stuffing to evolve for several years.

2011 Cabernet Sauvignon, Mohrhardt Ridge Vineyard, Sonoma County
Mohrhardt Ridge is less than five miles from the Pacific Ocean, yet at 1500 feet elevation is always above the fog. It ripens late and typically retains high acid / low pH, giving the wines surprising longevity despite the relatively soft tannins. We often refer to it as the stylistic antithesis to big jammy Napa Cabs. Several wine writers / reviewers have noted a similarity to wines from the Bordeaux commune of St. Estephe.

2011 was a cool, late vintage which demanded patience when determining harvest schedule. Our hand was forced by impending October storms in some cases – pick it or forget about it. We picked Roussanne earlier than we would have preferred and it became the basis for the Duchess; we let the Petit Verdot hang and lost most of it. We let the Mohrhardt Ridge Cabernet hang through two major storms because it wasn’t ripe, yet was in fantastic condition. Our gamble paid off when a week of unseasonably warm weather at the end of October gave us full maturity and flavor.

This vintage exhibits aromas and flavors typical of Mohrhardt Ridge – cassis, cherry, tobacco leaf, mint, olive and cedar. Because this was a relatively soft vintage we blended in some Cabernet Franc to add a bit more tannin and body, giving the wine more character and improving potential longevity. It is drinking superbly at the moment, but should hold up for another 3-4 years.

2011 Cabernet Sauvignon, Handal-Denier Vineyard, Dry Creek Valley
The Handal-Denier Vineyard is located on the east facing slope above West Dry Creek Road. This is the warmest site of all the vineyards we use and never has any problem ripening fully, even in cool wet years.  2011 was our latest harvest ever for this vineyard, yet it still ripened fully before the first October storms.

Typical of Handal-Denier, there is lots of bright cherry and blackberry fruit with bell pepper, cocoa, olive and brown spice. This wine is rich and fleshy, with enough tannin to stand another 3-7 years of aging.

2013 Cabernet Sauvignon, Karren Vineyard, Sonoma Mountain
Karren Vineyard is perched high up the eastern slope of Sonoma Mountain, with a commanding view of Sonoma Valley and the Mayacamas range. The thin volcanic clay soil causes moisture stress for the vines, resulting in very small, tannic berries that can ripen very quickly. The timing of harvest is the most important decision a vintner makes each harvest, and there is no room for error with the Karren Vineyard. Here, grapes can go from green and harsh to overripe and raisiny in a matter of days. Some years the wine from this vineyard is too tannic to bottle by itself, and brings concentration, intensity and structure to our Sonoma County Cabernet blend. In favorable harvests, such as 2013, the Karren Cabernet achieves fruit intensity and richness that balance the tannins, resulting in concentrated wines with great aging potential. We have bottled a Karren Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 7 times in 13 years of buying the grapes.

Lots of deep blueberry-blackberry fruit, cinnamon, coffee and leather aromas. Earthy, with a full, chewy structure that will complement rich stews and roasted or barbequed meats. This wine should age well for 10 to 15 years from vintage.

2013 Chardonnay, Sonoma Valley
Our 2013 Chardonnay was produced from a blend of grapes from a vineyard in Carneros, Hobert Nelson’s steep, east facing vineyard on Sonoma Mountain, and our Estate vineyard. As with the wonderful 2009 and 2010 vintages, we cold fermented about 25% of the total blend in stainless steel and used a limited amount of new oak for the barrel fermented portion.

Our goal has always been to produce wines with both intensity and great balance, to maximize the inherent quality of the grapes. The most important aspects of this quest are growing or purchasing great grapes, paying attention to detail, and keeping an open mind. Our cardinal rule in winemaking is that there are no rules, no formulas, no “right” way. Our knowledge base grows with each vintage, but the grapes vary with each vintage and need to be treated differently to produce the best wine possible.

This medium bodied Chardonnay features complex aromas and flavors of pear, citrus, green apple, elder flower, nutmeg and a hint of toasty oak, with sufficient acid to give a clean, crisp finish. In describing this wine, the term nervosity comes to mind It is bright and lively and will make a much superior dinner companion than so many of the sweet, oaky, disjointed Chardonnays being produced these days.

2013 Marsanne, Estate Vineyard
Marsanne is the dominant white variety of the Northern Rhone, where it is sometimes blended with Roussanne but often bottled by itself. We have chosen to blend a small amount of another Northern Rhone grape, Viognier, in order to enhance aroma.

This Marsanne has somewhat more subtle aromas than the Roussanne, with lime and orange, crème brulee, marzipan, honeysuckle and mineral notes. It has good viscosity and richness, yet is quite dry, with a clean, slightly tart finish. Wonderful with soft cheeses, any fish or fowl with a cream based sauce, or just to sip as an aperitif.

2013 Roussanne, Estate Vineyard
Roussanne is a variety that has been grown in the Northern Rhône appellations of Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, St. Joseph and St. Peray for centuries.  A century ago, White Hermitage (then predominantly Roussanne) was considered the best white wine in France.  It is less widely planted in the Northern Rhône these days because of its susceptibility to mildew, rot and other viticultural problems such as poor fruit set, and is often blended with Marsanne in those appellations.

The aroma is intense and complex, very floral (honeysuckle and rose petal), along with citrus peel, vanilla and tropical fruit.  The texture is supple and creamy without heaviness.  Flavors of citrus, green apple and a mineral note lead to a wonderfully long finish.  The balance is exquisite, neither watery nor cloying, neither sweet nor tart.  This vintage of Roussanne should really shine at the table, matching well with a broad variety of cuisine, including spicy dishes.

Wellington Vineyards

Owner:
Peter Wellington
Founded:
1986
Location:
Glen Ellen, CA

Wellington Vineyards is owned Peter Wellington. Peter's father John purchased the winery site in 1986. At the time, it consisted of 20 acres of old vines and a few decrepit old fruit and nut trees. Replanting of part of the old vineyard and orchard started in 1988. The winery was completed in time for the 1989 crush. We grow approximately half the grapes we use and purchase the remainder, primarily from small, unique vineyards.

The estate vineyards consist of 21 acres, 8 of which are 85 to 117 years old. There are 24 different varieties in the old vineyard, with the most common being Zinfandel, Carignan, Alicante Bouschet, Grenache and Syrah. In addition, there are 10 acres of eleven to sixteen year old vines that consist of Merlot, Chardonnay, Marsanne, and Syrah. We grow more Merlot than anything else. Three more acres were replanted in 2001, predominantly to Syrah, Zinfandel and Grenache.
