Coping

Some use a natural light lamp. Others prefer to ride it out in the dark with a case of their favorite wine.

It's fall. The leaves are changing colors. The air is getting crisp. The days are getting shorter. And my seasonal affective disorder is about to go full-on sob fest. Batten down the hatches, folks. It's gonna be a long winter.

Because while everyone's curled up with a cup of hot cocoa and toasting marshmallows by the fire pit out back, I'll be inside. In the dark. By myself. With a full case of Wellington wines by my side. It's just how I cope, OK?

You may see a bottle of Merlot with a nose of deep blackberry, blueberry and cherry aromas. But I see a bottle of freakin' sunshine.

On the outside this may looks like a Cabernet that is full and supple without being overly sweet or heavy. But let me tell ya, my friends. It goes down as smooth as Xanax sprinkles on an ice cream sundae.

Then there's The Duke and Syrah. I like to pretend they're a band that plays the kind of music that makes Emo kids feel sorry for themselves. The first is medium bodied while the latter is rich and plush. If they were a real band, they would have broken up a long time ago citing "creative differences."

I know this all sounds very melancholy. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Two actually. The twins. (That's what I call them.) The concentrated blackberry fruit aromas of the first Zin take me back to a simpler time. And the notes of chocolate, cinnamon and coffee of the second reminds me that the sun will come up tomorrow. And everything is going to be alright.

Features

2007 Merlot, Sonoma Valley Estate Bottled 750ml 2-Pack

The nose has deep blackberry, blueberry and cherry aromas, brown sugar/caramel, lots of brown spice (cinnamon and nutmeg) with hints of chocolate, black tea, tobacco and cedar. The fruit is spot-on ripe, with neither any greenness nor raisin. The entry is full bodied and supple, but with enough acid to keep it clean and focused. The flavors echo the aromas – lots of fruit and spice. The finish is clean and dry with good length. This vintage has a bit more tannin than the previous couple of years and has good potential to develop with aging over the next 2-5 years. This wine will pair nicely with stews, pot roast, and Toby's favorite-spinach farfalle pasta with lots of pine nuts.

2007 Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma County 750ml 2-Pack

Deep, youthful dark red color. Aromas of black currant and wild cherry with notes of mint, vanilla, caramel and spice. The oak is well integrated and not overpowering. The entry is full and supple without being overly sweet or heavy, the mid palate fruity with lively acid; the finish a bit chewy still, with lingering fruit and oak. With over 2 years of bottle age, this wine already has a smooth, long finish, but still has the stuffing to evolve for several years.

2007 Syrah, England Crest, Sonoma Valley 750ml 2-Pack

Aromas of blackberry and cassis, that smoky – gamy Syrah je ne sais quoi with notes of coffee, cinnamon and caramel. The entry is rich and plush, the middle slightly tart and chewy and the finish long with some lingering tannin. This wine is a little bigger than the Estate, and is just starting to come into its own.

N/A The Duke 10 750ml 2-Pack

Wellington's world famous Duke is back for the 10th time for a limited time only.  Perhaps the best value in Wine Country, fans of Wellington await the release of this fun blend, The Duke. Wellington changes the components every year, and normally sell out in a matter of weeks.  This is a medium bodied red with enough acid and tannin to make it a good match for burgers, pizza, stews, etc.  The dominant primary aromas are blackberry, raspberry and cherry fruit, with notes of licorice, sage, sandalwood and brown spices.  No, it doesn’t have a 90 second finish or other attributes that will cause it to be confused for a $50 bottle, and it probably won’t age for five years or more, but it is flavorful, balanced and eminently drinkable.

2007 Zinfandel, Meeks Hilltop Ranch, Sonoma Valley 750ml 2-Pack

The concentrated blackberry fruit aromas with hints of raspberry, cherry, cinnamon and black pepper say classic “Zin.” The entry is smooth and full, and the mid-palate has great flavor intensity (Zintensity?). The finish is bright, with great flavor persistence. 2007 was a dream year weather-wise, and this wine shows off all of the inherent quality of the vintage. It drinks beautifully now and should last several more years.

2007 Zinfandel, Sonoma Valley 750ml 2-Pack

Blackberry fruit with notes of chocolate, cinnamon, coffee and tar. Big, sweet entry, chewy tannins, big mid-palate fruit – like a dark chocolate covered raspberry.

Wellington Vineyards

Founded:
1986
Owner:
Peter Wellington
Location:
Glen Ellen, CA
Wellington Vineyards is owned Peter Wellington. Peter's father John purchased the winery site in 1986. At the time, it consisted of 20 acres of old vines and a few decrepit old fruit and nut trees. Replanting of part of the old vineyard and orchard started in 1988. The winery was completed in time for the 1989 crush. We grow approximately half the grapes we use and purchase the remainder, primarily from small, unique vineyards.

The estate vineyards consist of 21 acres, 8 of which are 85 to 117 years old. There are 24 different varieties in the old vineyard, with the most common being Zinfandel, Carignan, Alicante Bouschet, Grenache and Syrah. In addition, there are 10 acres of eleven to sixteen year old vines that consist of Merlot, Chardonnay, Marsanne, and Syrah. We grow more Merlot than anything else. Three more acres were replanted in 2001, predominantly to Syrah, Zinfandel and Grenache.
