Hair Of A Different Dog

Just hear us out on this: we might have found the wine for your next breakfast party.

Yeah, we know what you’re saying. “But, Wine.Woot, breakfast is for Mimosas and Bloody Marys!” Well, dear reader, you can trust that Peter Wellington has thrown back a few in his time, and with today’s offering… look, we don’t want to speak for him, but maybe he’d agree that it’s time you branch out! You’re too predictable! So throw that bubbly back in the cooler and serve breakfast guests a four pack of Wellington Estate and England Crest Syrahs.

First up: the 2007 Vintage Estate. And what do we have here? Why, only fresh fruit and a bacony Syrah signature! Imagine the caramel, the citrus peel, the aromas of blueberries and black raspberry wafting out of the nose. Sounds like the kind of pancakes you want in your kitchen, don’t it? Or maybe you can find it a home next to some yummy sausage and onion frittata?

Or what about the 2007 England Crest Syrah? Notes of coffee and cinnamon and caramel with those fine blackberry aromas again. Maybe it’s not a drink you could wake up to every day, but imagine a glass with a delicious warm ham biscuit, or maybe a maple-bacon waffle. Yeah, you’re nodding now. Look at the possibilities that suddenly open to you when breakfast becomes a valid drinking time!

Sure, the Wellington Estate and England Crest Syrah four pack will be equally fine for later in the day, but will your friends stick around if you tell them Oh, we’re not drinking until three in the afternoon, sorry? Maybe your real friends will, but you don’t need to impress your real friends. You need to impress your acquaintances and your hangers-on! Show those fair-weather types you’re still on top by proving you can be daring AND classy. Bust out the Wellington Estate and England Crest Syrah and make your breakfast the very latest see-and-be-seen.

Or you can drink it sometime after noon, if you insist on being conventional. We can’t force your mind open.

  • Harvest: Sept. 26, 2007
  • 25.0 brix
  • pH: 3.53
  • 6 day fermentation
  • 100% French oak, 10% new
  • Bottled unfined & lightly filtered on Aug. 19, 2008
  • Alcohol: 14.0%
The aromas are quite forward , with the Viognier adding hints of peach and apricot to the intense blueberry and black raspberry-like fruit of the Syrah.  Though dominated by the fresh fruit character and the bacony Syrah signature, this wine also shows hints of caramel, citrus peel and white pepper.  The entry is fresh and lively, leading to an elegant, supple mid-palate.  The tannins are softer than in the 2006, leading to earlier prime drinkability.

2007 England Crest Syrah

  • Blend: 100% Syrah, clones 1 & 7
  • Harvest: Sept. 28 and Oct. 5, 2007
  • Average 24.8 brix
  • pH: 3.50
  • 7% of the juice was bled off prior to fermentation
  • 10 to 14 day fermentation
  • 100% French oak, 7% new
  • Bottled unfined & lightly filtered on Aug. 19, 2008
  • Alcohol: 14.7%

Aromas of blackberry and cassis, that smoky – gamy Syrah je ne sais quoi with notes of coffee, cinnamon and caramel.  The entry is rich and plush, the middle slightly tart and chewy and the finish long with some lingering tannin.  This wine is a little bigger than the Estate, and is just starting to come into its own.

Wellington Vineyards is owned Peter Wellington. Peters father John, purchased the winery site in 1986. At the time, it consisted of 20 acres of old vines and a few decrepit old fruit and nut trees. Replanting of part of the old vineyard and orchard started in 1988. The winery was completed in time for the 1989 crush. We grow approximately half the grapes we use and purchase the remainder, primarily from small, unique vineyards.

The estate vineyards consist of 21 acres, 8 of which are 85 to 117 years old. There are 24 different varieties in the old vineyard, with the most common being Zinfandel, Carignan, Alicante Bouschet, Grenache and Syrah. In addition, there are 10 acres of eleven to sixteen year old vines that consist of Merlot, Chardonnay, Marsanne, and Syrah. We grow more Merlot than anything else. Three more acres were replanted in 2001, predominantly to Syrah, Zinfandel and Grenache.
