2012 Alder Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon, Horse Heaven Hills
  • 91 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Dark ruby and garnet core with a crimson rim. Concentrated and intense; nuances cocoa, forest floor, truffles and red currant back up dark cherry and kirsch. A slight capsicum note gives this wine its varietal thumbprint without being overbearing. Round and generous with great flavor intensity and a persistent finish, this wine is seductive and polished.

Horse Heaven Hills: Naturally bounded on the North by the Yakima Valley appellation and on the South by the Columbia River, Horse Heaven Hills was officially designated as an AVA in 2005. Its proximity to the Columbia River and a distinctive topography moderate the extreme temperatures of the area and provide steep, south-facing slopes for quick-draining loamy soils.

Alder Ridge Vineyard: First planted in 1997, Alder Ridge is one of the state's most coveted vineyards, on a rolling plain set atop a steep bluff above the Columbia River.  Natural wine and air drainage protects the vines from the dramatic weather changes, both in the summer and winter.  Alder Ridge is known for exceptional long hang time, with a moderating effect of the river on summer heat spikes and winter freezes, giving the Cabernet for which the vineyard is known tougher skims and firm tannins.

2014 Canoe Ridge Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Horse Heaven Hills
Deep and voluptuous with rich currants, raspberry, anise and cedar, full bodied flavor finishes with well balanced tannins.

About the Vineyards: Located along the broadest stretch of the Columbia River, our vineyards enjoy a wonderful climate, with warm days and cool nights yielding high quality grapes.  The slope of shallow, low nutrients sandy loam soils over volcanic rock yields grape clusters and berries that are small and very concentrated in flavor and color.  The result is our most concentrated and complex Cabernet Sauvignon, amplifying the unique personality of Canoe Ridge Vineyard.  This Cabernet Sauvignon is comprised primarily of grapes grown in Block 1, one of the three oldest Cabernet Sauvignon blocks.

About the Vintage:The 2014 Washington State harvest proved to be spectacular with a record crop level and excellent quality.  All factors needed for success came together perfectly: cool nights, lots of warm weather in the grown season, and rain limited mostly to the shoulder seasons. Harvest started the third week of August and wrapped in the second week of November. The crop across the state was heavy, yet bountiful with quality.  Our vineyard team enjoyed weather that enabled them to pick at will, affording perfect flavor, acidity and sugar levels.

2013 Waterbrook Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley
Cocoa and dark fruit aromatics are followed by oaky, fruit-driven flavors such as black plums. A healthy grip of tannins and balanced acidity make this wine full-bodied, with a long, lingering finish that shows flavors of coffee, currant, leather and spice.

Vintage Note: The warmest vintage in a decade, 2013's growing season cooled off just in time for harvest, and picking proceeded at a normal pace starting at the end of August.  Total tonnage, approximately 220,000 tons, was up easily five percent over 2012, a record for Washington State.  With a warm 2013 vintage, growers spread out canopies a bit more than usual and adjusted crop sizes to achieve a good balance of acidity and phenolic ripeness.  Mother Nature made picking advantageous; varieties reached ripeness at different times, allowing crews a well-phased, thoughtfully-planned harvest.

Vendor Details

Alder Ridge Estate Winery
Alder Ridge Winery is a celebration of one of the founding, most highly reputed vineyards in the famed Horse Heaven Hills appellation of Washington State. Best known for its award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon, the vineyard’s first vines were planted in 1997 and includes plantings of Grenache, Mourvedre, Roussane, and Cinsault, among dozens more, making it the site of Washington’s most sought-after reds. Prized fruit from this prolific, 800-acre site is purchased by many of the state’s most notable boutique wineries.

Planted Varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Syrah, and specialty vines totaling 28 varieties, including some of Washington’s most sought-after Rhone varieties.

Canoe Ridge Vineyard
Canoe Ridge Vineyard focuses primarily on Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The estate vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA was first planted in 1989, followed by the opening of its Walla Walla winery, established in 1994. The name comes from the vineyard site on the eastern side of Washington adjacent to the Columbia River. Famed explorers Lewis & Clark named this crest of land; they thought the ridge looked like an overturned canoe. In its two decades of winemaking, Canoe Ridge Vineyard has earned more than 40 scores of 90 points or better.

Waterbrook
Waterbrook is recognized for producing wines that truly exemplify the outstanding vineyard sources in the Columbia Valley. From vineyard to bottle, every detail of production is completed by a passionate team led by winemaker John Freeman.
