Vineyard Fever

It’s a mixed marriage. My husband likes the Hawks View Vineyard Pinot, and I prefer the Olalla Vineyard.

At first, my friends couldn’t believe it. “You and Tony? Together? How do you overcome your – you know – differences?” My mom told me she just wanted me to be happy, but I could see a glint of doubt in her eyes: what has my baby girl gotten herself into?

And I’ll admit, sometimes it’s not easy. I have to accept that Tony will just never understand what it’s like to enjoy the sweet perfumey aroma and cherry, plum, caramel, and oak flavors of the Torii Mor 2007 Olalla Vineyard Pinot Noir. It took him a while to really come to terms with it, too. But after years of trying to convert me to the violet, raspberry, earth, and herb character of the Torii Mor 2007 Hawks View Vineyard Pinot Noir, he finally accepted that I had my favorite Torii Mor Pinot Noir and he had his.

The important thing is that we respect each other as human beings, human beings who need love and tenderness and complex, premium, ecologically produced vineyard-designated Pinot Noir. We may not swirl around together in the same bottle, but life as a Torii Mor Pinot Noir 2-Pack can be just as good.

  • Jacques Tardy, Winemaker
  • pH 3.82

  • Alcohol 13.65%
The 2007 Hawks View Vineyard Pinot Noir has a rich aroma, first of flowers, like violets, then as the wine is exposed to more air, a mix of raspberries, red cherries, boysenberries and earth notes. The flavors are of raspberries, red cherries and some dark cherries/boysenberries, earthiness followed by herb spices and very light oak notes. The wine has great acid presence, showcasing the elegant, forward fruit. The mouth-feel is soft, sweet and elegant, with just a touch of sweet tannins. The aftertaste is fruit rich and sweet with layers of mostly red and some dark fruits, earth notes, cedar-oak notes and light spiciness. The wine has a weightless texture, with soft tannins that fill the mouth and amplify the aftertaste. This wine will benefit from extended cellaring but can be enjoyed today.

2007 Olalla Vineyard Pinot Noir

  • Bottled: January 30, 2009
  • Release Date: May 2009
  • Jacques Tardy, Winemaker
  • pH 3.70
  • Total acidity (T.A.) 0.555gr/100 ml
  • Residual sugar (R.S.) 0.2 gr/100 ml

Torii Mor’s 2007 Olalla Vineyard Pinot noir has a sweet, floral-perfume aroma with a mix of fresh purple plums, caramel, vanilla and cherries, framed by an earthy note. The flavors show the same earthy note, with a mix of red and black cherries and caramel- oak notes. The wine has a good balance of acid and tannins. The texture shows sweetness, followed by a rich tannin structure that brings fullness to the long finish. This wine will benefit from a little more cellaring (until summer 2010), or decanted and aerated to soften up the tannins.
