A History Lesson

Wine this good should have textbooks written about it!

"Hey! I got this Thomas Alexander wine for tonight."

Thomas Alexander!? THE Thomas Alexander?

"Uh, yes. It's a 2010 Paso Robles Rhone Blend."

It doesn't matter what it is. I'm sure it'll be good. After all, we're talking about THE Thomas Alexander. The same guy who invented the lightbulb, right?

"What? No. That was Thomas Edison."

Oh, sorry. I meant the telephone. Not the lightbulb. Silly me.

"Huh? That was Alexander Graham Bell."

Really? I thought Thomas Alexander invented something.

"No... well, he did invent this Le Tigre wine, so I guess that counts for something."

Was he president?

"Huh?"

Yeah! He was the 3rd president, wasn't he?

"You mean Thomas Jefferson."

What? Oh, shoot. Not a president. A Secretary of the Treasury! Yeah! The first one?

"No, that was Alexander Hamilton."

Really? No, that doesn't make sense. Really? Are you sure?

"Yes."

Then who is Thomas Alexander?

"He's a winemaker. He made this wine."

Hmm. I guess that makes sense.

"Yes. It makes a lot of sense. Anyway, you want some?"

Yeah, sure.

Features

2010 Le Tigre Rhone Blend, Paso Robles 750ml 3-Pack

The 2010 Le Tigre is a brand new vintage of this powerful Rhone blend from Thomas Alexander- a "launch" on Wine.Woot.  The last of the 2009 is going to the library, but the 2010 has not yet been officially released on the winery's website.

The 2010 Le Tigre is a beautiful representation of West Side Paso Robles wine from grapes grown from one of the best vintages in Paso Robles in a while.  The relatively cooler growing season allowed for more even ripening resulting in better color and tannin development in the grape, which ultimately translated to a deeper, richer, and more complex wine.

The wine was fermented in open top T-bins, and punched down 2 - 3 times a day during fermentation.  At dryness the wine was pressed and barreled down into 100% French Oak.  The resulting wine has a lot of dark fruit on the nose, followed by some firm tannin structure, and continues on with a good acid balance.  This wine has loads of fruit, texture, and structure that will hold up for at least the next ten years.

Thomas Pitchon’s handcrafted small production Rhone wines are already among the best of the region...

Thomas Alexander Winery is a small production (500 cases total) boutique winery specializing in Rhone style wines.

"I started in the cellar for Clos LaChance winery, located in the Santa Cruz Mountains, working the 1999 and 2000 harvest. Then completed my Enology degree from Fresno State in 2003 and worked as an intern for Rosenblum Cellars in Alameda. In 2004 I became the Assistant winemaker under Jeff Cohn, and in 2005, I became the winemaker, working through the 2008 Harvest.

After Rosenblum sold to Diageo Corporation. I decided to move to Paso Robles to start my new label Thomas Alexander Winery. I chose Paso Robles because of my passion for working with Rhone varietals.

My passion for Rhone varietals was acknowledged through the production of 90+ point Wine Spectator Syrahs and Petite Sirahs at Rosenblum, and fueled by spending most of my pay check at great Rhone importers like Kermit Lynch and North Berkeley. As they were on the way home to San Francisco, it was irresistible not to stop in."
