Cuvée!

We've got tonight. Why don't Cuvée?

”Have you tried one of these bottles of Tercero Red Cuvée yet? This 2009 Loco is super vibrant."

"Cuvée? What’s that mean, anyway?"

"Sometimes it’s used to denote a particularly special wine or a unique blend."

"So, it basically means, like … awesome?"

"Well, no, not -"

"Oh man, did you see the game last night? That sack by Michael Sam was totally Cuvée."

"Yeah, I mean, you’re in the spirit of things, but -"

“I saw a bear fighting an eagle on the way to work today. So Cuvée, dude."

"We live in Atlanta."

"Have you ever had a chili dog with potato chips on it? Freakin’ Cuvée, my friend."

"You’re a tool."

"Cuvée!"

2009 Tercero Cuvee Loco, Larner Vineyard, Santa Ynez Valley 750ml

The 2009 Cuvee Loco is an homage to the Larner Vineyard, a spectacular site that sits in the new Ballard Canyon AVA here in the Santa Ynez Valley. The vines are planted in 100% sand, ensuring that they struggle to find water and therefore keeping the vines more naturally balanced.

The 2009 Loco is a blend of 75% Grenache and 25% Syrah from the vineyard. Both lots were fermented, basket pressed, and aged for 42 months in neutral French oak barrels separately, then blended together just before bottling. The wine is quite vibrant, with wonderful acidity that is allowing the wine to age beautifully. One thing I love about this particular wine is how it changes in the glass - sometimes, the Grenache takes center stage and sometimes the Syrah does. AND the wine, to me, is better on day 2 still!

2009 Tercero Cuvee Christie Santa Barbara County 750ml 2-Pack

The 2009 Cuvee Christie is our 4th release of one of our best selling reds, and with this vintage, a few 'changes' were made, leading to a wine of grace, of character, and of structure.

This was was aged for 42 months in neutral French oak barrels, by far the longest we have ever aged a red wine before. Why in the heck would we do this? There are a couple of reasons - 1) We wanted to 'experiment' and see what would happen if we actually had the cajones to do this! 2) 2009 was a 'big' vintage and we wanted to 'soften' the wine a bit and make it more drinkable upon release. 3) We tasted the wine throughout the entire aging process, and it just kept getting better!

We also added a touch of Petite Sirah to the blend in 2009, the first time we have done so. We did not 'need' to do this, but felt that the addition gave the wine more structure and therefore more 'ageability' than it would have had without it.

The final blend for the 2009 is 65% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah and 10% Petite Sirah.

Tercero Wines

Owner:
 Larry Schaffer
Location:
Los Olivos, CA

The idea for Tercero wines surfaced a number of years back. Larry Schaffer had been in the music, education and trade publishing industries for a number of years and had achieved all he had set out to do. It was time for a change...but to what? His first thought – a professional volleyball player? But alas, Larry is simply a bit height challenged, so it was time for Plan B – get into the wine business. The initial thought was to go into wine sales, but his thoughts quickly turned to challenging himself and taking on classes he never wanted to take as an undergraduate at UC Berkeley – those dreaded science classes. Not only did he take then on but he conquered them, transferred to UC Davis, and got his Master’s Degree in Viticulture and Enology in 2005.

After graduating, Larry and his family began a new chapter in their lives, relocating to the Santa Ynez Valley, where he became Enologist for Fess Parker Winery, a well-respected winery that makes a LOT of wine. Why here? The winemaking community was willing and wanting to help each other, but more importantly, it was simply an incredible place to raise children and live life!

A year after starting there, Larry was ready to ‘take the plunge’ and start buying grapes to make his own wines! It was scary and challenging at the same time – no matter how much you read about it or do it for others, it’s quite different when it’s ‘your own baby’...But it was also a way for Larry to ‘marry’ his past with his present – to use his sales/marketing skills along with his technical winemaking skills to see what he could produce...
