The Public Winery
Hi, I was wondering, could you tell me where the wine section is?
“Oh yes! Right down that aisle there.”
You know, that’s what the other librarian told me, and all I could find down there were books about wine. I didn’t see any actual wine bottles, specifically, no 2002 North Coast Meritage, with its perfect balance of fruit, spice, and deep toasted tannin.
“Umm, I’m sorry sir, are you asking if we have a wine bar?”
No way! I’m looking for your wine shelf. I don’t want to pay for wine; I want to… borrow it, and then return… the bottle.
“I still don’t quite understand.”
Well, like, if I wanted to check out a 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon from the W. Strycker Vineyard in Clear Lake – boasting its blackberry notes, a sort of fuselage inkiness backed with chalky cocoa, if you will – where would I find that?
“Libraries don’t carry wine, sir, if that’s what you’re asking for.”
What? That’s crazy! All of my winemaker friends are always talking about “pulling wine from the library” and stuff like that. Maybe it’s just this library. Do you have an Interlibrary Wine Loan thing or something? Maybe one where I could search by Wine Type – like “Cabernet Sauvignon” – or Vintage – like “2004”? Maybe even some advanced search options, like Vineyard search, so I could type in “Hedin,” or even a Flavor Details Database, so I could type in “firmer tannins and more pronounceable dark cinnamon chocolate spices”?
“I’m sorry, sir, but no libraries that I know of actually carry bottles of wine for checkout.”
Oh man, I’m an idiot! Of course no libraries would have bottles of wine.
“Well I’m glad I could help you with this.”
Obviously, they would have switched to digital by now! God, how could I have been so stupid? Here, I brought my USB drive. Let’s hop on one of these computers over here and you can show me a database where I can download some 2004 North Coast Merlot from the Wild Hare Vineyard. But wait, before we do that, what’s your connection speed here? I don’t want to lose any of the explosively wild, deep fruit nose, complex spice, or invigoratingly smooth finish due to weak bandwidth.
“Sir, I’m going to have to ask you to leave.”

This is such a well- developed, full-flavored Cab you won’t believe it came from the Russian River. More restrained blackberry fruit than Napa Cabs with firmer tannins and more pronounceable dark cinnamon chocolate spices; it’ll please the Cab traditionalists.
