Oh, sure. It’s your time, Pinot Noir.

Enjoy it while it lasts.

I see you there in your glass, part of some fancy Summerland Vineyard Designate Pinot Noir 2-Pack. You think you’re so great with your dense and earthy flavors like juicy strawberry and morel mushroom from the 2008 Santa Maria Valley. You must think you and the Edna Valley, with its acidity and notes of black cherry fruit are quite the pair, huh?

Well I used to be on top, too. I know how it goes. I was in vogue once upon a time, y’know. In the ‘80s I was all the rage. In fact, I was the only wine most people had heard of before wine was even a thing.

So live it up while you can. You’re just the flavor of the week, y’know. Tastes change. Flavor profiles go in and out of style all the time. I’m sure someone’s making a movie about another varietal as we speak. Your 15 minutes are almost up, pal.

Sincerely,

Merlot

The youngest vineyard in Summerland's portfolio shows Pinot Noir in a restrained, elegant style reminiscent of Volnay.  A truly expressive nose makes for a charming entry highlighted by dried rose petal and black tea leaf.  Smooth and juicy with snappy, racy acidity and lovely black cherry fruit; bright and lively with nervy, lifted flavors wrapped in silky, mellow texture.  The palate unfurls with ripe fresh black raspberry with notes of baking spices.  Lush and feminine with exquisitely articulated complex flavors and balanced structure.  Pair with loin of lamb or rabbit. Remarkable now, richer and more nuanced in a year or two.

Solomon Hills Pinot Noir embodies bright, red fruit and silky tannins. Dense and earthy, with juicy strawberry, clove and morel mushroom, this wine is showcased by its bright acid structure. Layered and long on the palate, with potpourri and cinnamon at first, followed by deeper notes of cured meats and star anise; this wine is the perfect match to sautéed duck breast or stuffed pork tenderloin.
