Wait a minute, you ask, if this is a Pinot Noir, why does it say “Death to the Infidel Zinfandel” on the label? Because, friends, family, fans and stalkers, there is actually a small amount of Zinfandel in this wine, the result not of winery error but rather the efficient use of inefficient winery equipment. The Pinot itself is Stillman's clone 777 San Simeon Coast, from an extreme cool climate vineyard under two miles from the Pacific with no intervening ridges, at approximately 600' elevation with extremely low yields: under one ton/acre (or bottle per vine) with consequent fruit density. The wine is jammed with Pinot cherry fruit, has excellent acidity and marvelous complexity, and a very long finish. The small amount of Zinfandel (10-14%) adds nuances of blackberry and plum.
“Death to the Infidel Zinfandel” is what the prophet Mohammed cried when he woke up on Satan’s porch with a terrible hangover, surrounded by empty bottles of bacon-infused Zin.

Zeppelin Winery is a very small producer of super premium wines, based on the Central Coast of California. Founded in 2009 by winemaker Stillman Brown of Red Zeppelin Winery and wine veteran Dan Lewis (he's the office guy) they produce tiny lots of Syrah and other misunderstood varietals, with almost invariably insane labels. Most can only be purchased directly, but once in a while they emerge into the light of day.
