Last of the Summer Wine

Let's do this. One last spree before sunset. A final frolic in the heat and haze. The next time we meet like this, the breezes will be cooler, the leaves will be redder, and the harvest will be almost ripe. It's the last Wine-Off of the summer. And we don't intend to waste it.

Features

2012 Stillman Pinot Noir, San Simeon Coast, San Luis Obispo County 750ml 2-Pack

Ladies, gentlemen, and fruit flies, this is some serious swill. (It must be, because the artists I've asked to do funny labels for it haven't come through.) To keep the tale shorter than Gibbon's 'Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire', here are the essentials of this wine: Extreme cool climate vineyard: under two miles from the Pacific, no intervening ridges, appx. 600' elevation. (I've had my eye on this vineyard for a long time, but stayed away until they got a vineyard manager who listened to me.) Perfect ripeness, high acidity, 13.8% alcohol. Extreme low yields: under one ton/acre (or bottle per vine) with consequent fruit density. Clone 777 is my favorite, having tasted it in multiple trials of California and Oregon vineyards over decades. The wine is dense with cherry and berry fruits, to my palate it takes up to a day to open up. It will age extremely well, given proper storage. Extreme low production: Made from only one ton of grapes, and racked and bottled unfiltered from barrel, the barrels were only blended hours before bottling. Extreme high quality: though Pinot Noir can be quite fickle, this wine is going to be a star.

Zeppelin Winery is a very small producer of super premium wines, based on the Central Coast of California. Founded in 2009 by winemaker Stillman Brown of Red Zeppelin Winery and wine veteran Dan Lewis (he's the office guy) they produce tiny lots of Syrah and other misunderstood varietals, with almost invariably insane labels.  Most can only be purchased directly, but once in a while they emerge into the light of day.
