Get to know St. Julian!

Founder Mariano Meconi named his winery after the patron saint of Faleria, his native village in Italy, and it's easy to see why. St. Julian's a pretty fascinating figure. Check it out:

Fun Facts about St. Julian.

  • St. Julian had the strength of a forklift. That's how he earned the nickname "Forklift."
  • St. Julian was the world's only shark-charmer.
  • St. Julian's signature dance move is the Macarena.
  • St. Julian won the NBA All-Star Game MVP award from 1980-1984. You may remember it differently. You're remembering it wrong.
  • St. Julian is the patron saint of circus folk. (That one is actually true.)
  • St. Julian is the patron saint of cabbage. (That one is a lie.)
  • St. Julian had a magical oboe, but he got rid of it because every time he went to parties, people were like, "Where's your magical oboe?" and he started to wonder if people only liked him because of his magical oboe.
  • St. Julian beat Jimi Hendrix in a thrash contest.
  • St. Julian hated the game Battleship.
  • In his spare time, St. Julian would wander crowded beaches and help children build elaborate sand castles. Then, he would point to the horizon and say, "What's that over there?" And while the child was looking away, he would decimate the sand castle and laugh, and nobody could really blame him, because that is hilarious and an important lesson in impermanence for the child.
  • St. Julian once ate cereal for dinner!

Features

2012 Reserve Riesling, Lake Michigan Shore 750ml 2-Pack

Absolutely pure in flavor, harmonious and well-proportioned in its architecture, this Riesling seems crisp and light, yet packs intense flavors of super ripe peach, mango, lemon zest and mineral. Its vivid acidity jammed with fruit leaves a wonderful sensation on the palate creating a luscious, food-friendly style. Literally, like liquid fruit!

This is a bright, clean wine designed to be consumed shortly after release. There is no oak aging to weigh it down. All aging took place in chilled stainless steel tanks before bottling to preserve the fresh fruit character.

Vineyard Notes: Burgoyne Ridge Vineyard - With farming roots coming from Germany, the Nitz family started growing juice grapes in Southwest Michigan in the 1940's as a grower for Welch's and home winemakers. In 1971, the farm started planting wine grape varietals. Dan Nitz, the fourth generation grower in the family, currently manages over 250 acres of juice grapes and 260 acres of wine grapes while employing more than twenty employees year round. As the farm continues to focus on wine grape varietals, Dan Nitz's passion for grape growing is evident in our wines.

2011 Reserve Late Harvest Riesling, Lake Michigan Shore 750ml 2-Pack

St. Julian has developed a style of late harvest Riesling that is crisp yet moderately sweet. The 2011 vintage was harvested at 22.1 degrees Brix. At that level of ripeness, the wine develops its trademark tangerine and apricot flavors. Aromas of citrus, stone fruit, and honey are followed by flavors of apricot, tangerine, and cream, along with a slight mineral edge. Acidity and sweetness are nicely balanced on the palate, making this Late Harvest Riesling a versatile food wine.

2012 Braganini Reserve Whole Cluster Riesling, Lake Michigan Shore 750ml 2-Pack

The 2012 Whole Cluster Riesling is bursting with lively aromas of ripe Red Haven peaches and tropical fruits. Bone dry, yet impeccably balances, this wine bursts with flavors of passion fruit, pineapple and tangy citrus fruits.

Winemaker Notes: The winemaking technique used to produce this wine begins in the vineyard. It is harvested in the early morning hours, so the fruit is cool when it reaches the winery. After harvesting, the fruit is crushed and destemmed to our Diemme membrane press. The juice is pressed to a tank, chilled and settled for 48 hours. The juice is then racked to a jacketed fermenter tank, where the wine undergoes a long, cool fermentation, which was 58-62F. This process extends the fermentation, which contributes to preserving Riesling’s fresh and fruity character.
