Oh man, I love campy ‘60s exploitation flicks!

Wait. Did you say “Barbaresco” or “Barbarella?”

No, I’m not disappointed. Well, maybe a little. I just heard Socré Italian Barbaresco and got all excited, because, well, I thought you said Barbarella. Like maybe it was gonna be some super kitschy European cut of the film or something. Don’t get me wrong, this is good, too. It’s just sort of like expecting a Cabernet and drinking a Merlot. Both are good, you were just all set up for one.

I mean, this 2007 Socré Barbaresco is no wild excessive machine, but it’s no biting bird cage, either. It’s got a light, feminine touch just like Barbarella herself before it smacks your palate with a sensual slap of cherry, strawberry, and licorice flavor with bright acidity. And just like Barbarella, this wine finishes spicy.

And I wouldn’t blame you if you sipped the 2008 Socré Barbaresco Roncaglie and thought you had been transported to the Labyrinth of Love. Who wouldn’t love a medium-bodied wine with flavors of red berries lit up with notes of violet, rose wood, and earthy aromas? It’s a five star, double-rated astronavigatrix kinda wine, for sure.

I was just hoping to indulge in some campy sci-fi. And Jane Fonda.

Barbaresco Docg
Location:
Piemonte, Italy
This small estate owns vineyards in one of the Grand Crus of Barbaresco: Roncaglie. Among its neighbours Socre’ can enumerate Gaja (with Sorì Tildin and Costa Russi vineyards) and Poderi Colla.  As early as 1880, Roncaglie was already recognized as one of the best and most important areas for Barbaresco production, and mentioned in Lorenzo Fantini’s fundamental publication on Viticulture and Oenology in the Province of Cuneo.

Argilo-calcaire soils, perfect exposition (South and South-west), mild winds and great temperatures fluctuations, give rise to deep and elegant wines. The vineyards (with ages ranging from 10 to 50 years) are planted with a density ranging from 4500 vines per ha up to 8000 vines per ha.
