All-New All-Different Wine.Woot Details

Wine.Woot purchases now bypass your cart entirely! This means you gotta buy Wine.Woot items on their own, using your Amazon Payments account. You can't mix 'em up with stuff from our other sites. This cowboy's ridin' solo.

Be aware that anything in your cart from the other Woot sites is still out there and looking forward to your return. We'd hate for anything to sell out while you're reading this.

Live, from the Sonoma County Colosseum, it's Winestlemania!

Four wines enter, one wine leaves ... followed shortly by the other three, since we're selling them in a package.

The arena is sold out. The crowd shrieks and hollers. The lights are up. The terrible nu-metal soundtrack blares. A man stands alone in the ring, a microphone dangling before him. The lights dim, and a spotlight highlights him. The terrible nu-metal ceases, the crows hushes. It’s time for the main event.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, boys and girl, children of all ages, welcome to the final match of the Wine Wrestling Federation’s Tag Team Championship Tournament. Let’s get ready to MUUUUUUUUUUUUUMBLE!"

"Introducing first, in the red corner, wearing the clean straw colored trunks, hailing from Morine Ranch, the Roussanne with the Plan, the Passion Fruit Powerhouse, the French Oak Fermented Fist of Fury: 2009 Shannnnnnnon Ridge Roussanne!"

"And in the deep garnet trunks, his tag-team partner, from the Lake County High Elevation Collection, The Blackberry Bandit, The Vanilla Oak Victory Machine, The Cinnamon Spice Supernova: The 2010 Shaaaaaannon Ridge Wrangler!"

"And in the blue corner, their opponents. Introducing first, in the deep purple trunks, from Caldwell Ranch, 50% American Oak, 50% Neutral French, 100% Fan Favorite, the Blueberry Bruiser, the Tobacco Whacko: 2009 Shhhhhhhannon Ridge Petite Sirah!"

"And his partner, wearing the straw-like trunks, coming to us from Morine Ranch, the Star Fruit Superstar, the Peach Flavored Powder Keg, the Cream Soda Crippler: 2009 Ssssssssshannoooooooooon Ridge Viognier!”

The lights come up, the bell rings and the match begins. Nothing much happens, though, as bottles of wine lack the legs or ambition to really get a good match going, so instead all four bottles just sit idly being delicious.

Winery Details

Shannon Ridge

Founded:
1995
Owners:
Clay and Margarita Shannon
Location:
Lake County
We both grew up in California's wine country: Clay in the Healdsburg area in Sonoma County, and Margarita in St. Helena in Napa County. We met when we were both working at a Napa Valley winery. From there, we went on to build a vineyard management and development company.

We’ve grown fruit for many wonderful people and we've enjoyed tasting what our grapes have contributed to their wines. Still, we wondered how our wine grapes would stand up on their own. For us, the challenge was to take our grapes from bud break all the way to the bottle. Our goal was to make really enjoyable wines that taste like perfectly ripe grapes on the day you harvest them.

In the late 1980's we began working with wine grapes from Lake County and recognized the area's potential to grow great mountain fruit. Then, in 1995, we visited a magnificent mountain property about 35 miles north of the Napa county line. At altitudes of 2,100 to 2,400 feet above sea level these steep mountain ridges are cooled by steady winds off Clear Lake and from the higher peaks just north of us. The lean, rocky volcanic soils promised to make the vines produce small berries with concentrated flavors.

There was also the stunning beauty of the ridge. To the south, you see the deep blue waters of Clear Lake sheltered by Mount Konocti. To the north, snow-capped mountains loom above, and all around us brick-red rocky soils. The landscape is rugged and wild and so are our neighbors -- we're surrounded by wildlife. In addition to the ducks, geese, deer, raccoons, quail, golden eagles, wild turkey, chipmunks and bobcats that visit us regularly, we've spotted bald eagles, a mother bear and her cubs and mountain lion tracks! Everything about this land screamed out to us, and we answered with an enthusiastic “yes!”

Our first vineyard on the ridge was Terre Vermeille, which is planted to Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Barbera and Sauvignon Blanc. Since then, we've developed several additional vineyards and have put down our roots here. For the first three years we lived in a small cabin on the Caldwell Ranch. We've moved into a more accommodating home with magnificent views of the vineyards and mountain ridges.

We're fully committed to this adventure and we invite you to join us. Visit us at Shannon Ridge – or stay in touch through our website.

What are Top Comments?

Top Comments are discussion forum posts we have deemed worthy of your time. Listen, we get a lot of comments, and most of the time, it's pretty forgettable stuff; but sometimes you rise to the top like butterfat in milk. We don't recommend you base your self-worth on how often we feature your comments, but we don't expressly forbid it either.
