Who is Sequana, you ask?

She's only the goddess of the river Seine! She rides around in a duck boat (not unlike the Ride the Ducks tour boats we know today).

In ancient times (or whenever), the sick and weak brought models of innards and limbs to Sequana, hoping she could magic up a cure. We're not sure if that worked out so well, but just in case, we approached Sequana and her enchanted Duck Boat with a list of other requests:

-Please give me a marsupialian pouch so I can always have a snack.

-I'd like the power to read minds, but only the minds of people who are currently on the toilet.

-Keep Rob Ford around just a little longer, that I might look better in my own political endeavors.

-Please force Nick Saban and Les Miles to do a buddy cop movie together.

-Whenever I sneeze, tiny, colorful balloons come out of my nose instead of boogers.

-I want to be constantly surrounded by Bald Eagles.

-Can you give me the ability to keep houseplants alive?

-Please make it so cats speak English.

-I just want some friends.

-Make all salads taste like birthday cake.

-Give me the gift of identifying any kind of apple just by waving a hand over it. And I'd also like some friends.

2010 Sequana Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir, 375ml 6-Pack

Winemaker James MacPhail allows each Sequana vineyard its own artful expression by approaching winemaking with a singular goal, letting the vines tell their own story. Artisan techniques such as hand-sorting, cold-soaking and extended maceration, along with aging sur lie in French oak capture this simple notion: the wine recalls where it comes from. With the winemaker’s easy hand a constant, each of Sequana’s offerings presents a unique tale of Pinot Noir, a story well told, a vineyard well represented.

Displaying the classic qualities of the Santa Lucia Highlands, this silky Pinot Noir has earthy aromas and flavors of dried cranberry, strawberry rhubarb and sour Bing cherry. The wine is medium- to full-bodied, lush and rich.

Appellation: The Santa Lucia Highlands overlook Monterey’s Salinas Valley. Southeast facing slopes benefit from morning sun, followed by cooling afternoon sea breezes cresting over the Gabilan Mountains. Vines develop deep roots in alluvial soils deposited over ancient marine terraces. Pinot Noir flourishes here, producing wines characterized by flavors of wild cherry and appealing earthiness.

Vineyard: Winemaker James MacPhail describes this coastal setting as “nothing short of spectacular.” The Sarmento Vineyard sits on benchlands of ancient, rolling alluvial soils topped with rock-studded sandy loam. Grapes for the Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir come from two separate 10-year-old vineyard blocks – each with a distinctive Pinot Noir clone. This family-owned, sustainably- farmed vineyard has one of the longest growing seasons in California, with extended hang times resulting in fruit with full physiological ripeness and layers of complex flavors.

Vendor Details

Sequana Vineyards

Location:
Sonoma County, CA

Sequana produces single vineyard Pinot Noirs from California’s premier Coastal appellations – Green Valley of Russian River Valley in Sonoma County and Santa Lucia Highlands in Monterey. Produced from grapes grown in small, sustainably farmed, family owned vineyards, these silky fruit-forward wines are crafted by gentle, minimal-intervention winemaking, are natural and striking examples of the personality and varietal characteristics of each single vineyard. The wines are named in honor of Sequana, the Franco-Roman goddess of the River Seine, which flows through the ancestral birthplace of Pinot Noir.

Pinot Noir specialist James MacPhail has complete control over the creation of Sequana’s limited production wines – from farming to winemaking. He understands Pinot Noir’s temperament: its ability to convey the signature of each single vineyard and its preference for restrained, gentle winemaking.  He carefully designed his winemaking education by working with Pinot Noir leaders Merry Edwards and Gary Farrell.
