Man, I was punk rock once, but now I do wine criticism. Really, it’s the same thing, you know?

What got me was that night, when I was in the back alley with Joey and Dee Dee, and Joey said “Hey, bro, the scene’s really changing, you know?” and I said “Yeah, it used to be just the wild kids, and now it’s all the cultured kids.” And that’s when it hit me: punk rock was just like the Saxon Brown 2008 One Oak Zinfandel Two Pack. The wild yeast came in over cold soaked fruit, made some exciting changes, made a difference, then the cultured yeast stole the scene and everything it used to stand for. And that’s when I decided it was time for me to make some money!

So I threw away my studded leather jacket and that pin in my nose, and I bought, get this, a tie. And I took a long drink of the Saxon Brown 2008 One Oak Zinfandel and said as loud as I could, “I TASTE DARK CHOCOLATE, MOCHA, RASPBERRY, AND AN ELEGANT COMPLEXITY THAT EVOLVES IN THE GLASS!” And wouldn’t you know it? Some guy who ran a gallery heard me, and hired me full time as his wine buyer! Talk about luck!

What? The 70s? Man, are you kidding? I wasn’t around back then. I was talking about my buddy, Joel Thornton, and his little sister Dee Dee who always tagged along. Where’d you get this “70s” thing from? I already said I was drinking a Saxon Brown 2008 One Oak Zinfandel Two Pack. Didn’t you notice 2008 was the year? Man, you wouldn’t have lasted ten seconds with a real punk back in my era. You know, of four years ago. Back when it was wild.

Great color again! One Oak was planted approximately ten years ago, on lean soils at the southwest part of Sonoma Valley. The 2008 vintage of One Oak has the site’s signature of dark chocolate, mocha and raspberry, along with claret like elegance. The 2008 seems to have another level of complexity that evolves in the glass after 10-15 minutes…making it a wine to go back to over a period of time.

Owner/winemaker Jeff Gaffner is a 25 year veteran of the wine industry. Jeff’s career as a winemaker was launched in 1981 at Chateau St. Jean under the tutelage of renowned vintner Richard Arrowood. Most notably, Jeff was part of the winemaking team responsible for Chateau St. Jean’s 1996 Cinq Cepages, which was named the 1999 Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator Magazine.

In 1997 Saxon Brown was launched, named for the willful heroine in Jack London’s Valley of the Moon. The winery gained instant recognition for its flagship “old vine” Zinfandel from the family’s Casa Santinamaria Vineyard; one of only a few remaining classic, Italian field blended vineyards. The winery also produces an “old vine” Semillon from the same vineyard, as well as Pinot Noir from the famed Durell Vineyard (Sonoma County) , Pinot Noir, Syrah and Zinfandel from Parmellee Hill Vineyard (Sonoma Valley), Syrah and Syrah Rose from Flora Ranch (Chalk Hill), and Semillon from Cricket Creek Vineyard (Alexander Valley).
