2015 Bilgola Estate Merlot, South Eastern Australia
Deep crimson in color with youthful, purple hues, this wine shows lifted aromas of spicy, red berry notes and a touch of toasted oak.  The palate is rich and lush with notes of blackcurrant and plum that are enhanced by baking spices and silky tannins.

Food Pairing: Because of its fruit profile and lush body, this Merlot can be paired with leaner cuts of meat such as flank steak or even roasted chicken.

Vineyards: Bilgola Estate Merlot is a classic expression of Australian winemaking.  The Riverina vineyards thrive at an elevation of approximately 120 meters.  Average vine age is 15 years old, and the soil is characterized as an alluvial black, self-mulching clay loam.  Clay soils are known for producing wines with high extract and color; these soils also help to keep vines cool and maintain water - important traits for the vines of Riverina.  This appellation can experience very hot summer months, with average temperatures reaching 91 degrees Fahrenheit in some sections.  The 2015 growing season produced high quality reds in Australia; a wet winter was followed by a dry spring, pushing harvest dates slightly ahead of schedule. A few weeks into harvest, temperatures warmed up again, bringing additional ripeness to grapes still on the vine.  This Merlot was harvested in early March during the evening to inhibit wild yeast fermentation.  The parcels were fermented in static fermenters at warm temperatures and received oak treatment.  Additional oak maturation for eight months in a combination of French and American oak add to the complexity in this wine.

2015 Lawson's Ridge Riverina Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon, Riverina, Australia
Deep, ruby red in color with hints of purple, this wine is full of cherry, ripe blackberry, and plum aromas. On the palate, lush boysenberry and black cherry give way to a hint of chocolate, black pepper, and a touch of oak spice.

Food Pairing: The rich fruit and spice of Shiraz make it ideal for pairings with barbecue dishes or Tandoori.

Vineyards: Nestled amongst the Blue Mountains in New South Wales, Australia, the town of Lawson represents the intersection of modernity and tradition. Located in the warm, Mediterranean climate of South Eastern Australia, vines are healthy and produce high quality grapes. For this wine, grapes are sourced from vineyards at an elevation of approximately 120 meters, thereby escaping some of the more extreme heat. The soil here is an alluvial, black self-mulching soil layered over heavy loam and gray clay. The combination of loam and clay contributes to hearty vines, as the loam provides fertility and the clay holds water. The 2015 vintage was excellent for both Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon; a wet winter and drier than average spring contributed to an early, condensed harvest. Late heat during harvest ensured that grapes reached optimal ripeness before picking. Harvest occurred during the night to protect delicate fruit nuances, and fermentation occurred with American oak treatment. Additional 6 months of aging in a combination of French and American oak bring out the spicy characteristics of Shiraz.

2016 Yankalilla Chardonnay, South Eastern Australia
Pale straw in color with green highlights, this Chardonnay shows lifted aromas of peach, pear, and citrus notes layered over a touch of oak.  On the palate, crisp notes of lemon and lime are complemented by white peach, nutmeg, and a hint of toast.

Food Pairing: The layers of fruit and French oak influence make this Chardonnay ideal for pairing with butternut squash ravioli or cheeses such as mild cheddar.

Vineyards: Yankalilla - pronounced "Yoogalilla" - is a wine from South Eastern Australia.  Bordered by the Great Dividing range on the east and the Pacific Ocean to the south, the South Eastern Australia appellation is Australia's most productive winegrowing region.  Vintage 2016 delivered high yields in South Eastern Australia due to warmer than average temperatures and slightly less rainfall than usual.  It is considered to be one of the best vintages Australia has ever seen.  The Chardonnay vines for Yankalilla grow in alluvial red medium reserves during vintages such as 2016.  Harvest began in early February during the cool evenings.  The Chardonnay was then cold-soaked, bag pressed, and received 2 months of gross lees contact.  Fermentation in the presence of French oak as well as an additional two months of maturing in French oak barrels add layers of spice and roundness to this wine.

Santa Rosa, California

Founder and CEO, Bruce Cunningham, has been in the wine industry since 1987. After earning an undergraduate degree in Wine Marketing Studies at the University of Adelaide (South Australia), Bruce attended business school and has been involved in many aspects of the industry with a specific focus in packaging and production. After relocating to New York from Australia, he saw the need for custom labels of Australian wines for direct marketing needs in the USA. A W Direct (formerly Aussie Wine Direct), was born. This focus on a market segment was, at the time embryonic, and quickly led to further expansion of both suppliers and various segments of the wine market.

A W Direct relocated to California in 2004, and the team expanded, led by the formidable talents of his business partner, Kimberly Cunningham. Kim - an engineer, and techno-geek at heart - with her experience in running divisions of some of the world’s largest companies, was able to build systems to help create the efficiency needed to allow A W Direct to grow, but also compete in a wine world that can be inflexible and intolerant. As the company grew, Kim enhanced the business by developing a successful team of energetic, challenge-driven people who have the right “moxie” to keep our well-oiled machine running smoothly.
