From the Lucas & Lewellen vineyards in Santa Barbara County, Louis Lucas selects choice lots for a limited production of premium wines. Attention to detail in the vineyards yields superior quality grapes from which Megan McGrath Gates crafts award winning wines. The vineyards of Lucas & Lewellen are located in the three principal wine grape growing regions of Santa Barbara County: the Santa Maria Valley, the Los Alamos Valley, and the Santa Ynez Valley. These valleys all run west from the coastal mountains to the Pacific Ocean, allowing warm days and cool nights to produce a long, gentle growing season.
2012 Queen of Hearts Cabernet Sauvignon, Santa Barbara County
Grown in our family‐owned Santa Barbara County vineyards, the grapes for this Cabernet Sauvignon were hand harvested at the peak of their flavor. This wine exhibits flavors and aromas of blackberry, raspberry, and chocolate; perfectly balanced with supple tannins and a lingering finish.
Vineyard Notes: Stretching for over a mile of Highway 101 frontage just south of the town of Los Alamos, the Los Alamos vineyards are home to over 20 varieties of grapes, representing the principal varieties of the Rhône, Burgundy and Bordeaux regions of France, as well as Italian varieties. Some of the vines planted from cuttings brought over from Europe over 35 years ago. Our Valley View Vineyard is a warm climate vineyard in the Santa Barbara County AVA. Sloping gently toward the Santa Ynez River, the south‐facing lower vineyard features what many consider Santa Barbara Countyʹs best Cabernet Sauvignon, in addition to Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah, much in demand by local wineries. This hilltop vineyard produces outstanding Cabernet Franc, Syrah, and small quantities of Petit Verdot, and Malbec.
2011 Queen of Hearts Merlot, Santa Barbara County
Grown in our family owned Santa Barbara County vineyards, the grapes for this Merlot were hand harvested at the peak of their flavor. This wine exhibits blackberry and spicy aromas balanced with silky tannins, and a lingering finish.
Vineyard Notes: Our Goodchild and Los Alamos Vineyards are warm climate vineyards in the Santa Barbara County AVA. Along both sides of the acclaimed Foxen Wine Trail, the Goodchild vineyards consistently produce prize‐winning Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. The soils vary from clay and gravel river deposits to hillside and hilltop sites reminiscent of the great vineyards of Burgundy. Stretching for over a mile of Highway 101 frontage just south of the town of Los Alamos, the Los Alamos vineyards are home to over 20 varieties of grapes, representing the principal varieties of the Rhône, Burgundy and Bordeaux regions of France, as well as Italian varieties. Some of the vines planted from cuttings brought over from Europe over 25 years ago.
