Features

For over 30 years, we've been partnering with well-known Paso Robles grape-grower Sam Balakian to source the grapes that we've used to add depth and complexity to many of our California wines. As interest in the region continued to grow, we knew the time was right to craft a Paso Robles-centric family of wines that would truly showcase this emerging region. Whenever the idea came up, we would casually refer to it as "Project Paso". When the wines were finished, we just couldn't imagine calling them anything else, and with that Project Paso was born.

2012 Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml 2-Pack

Polished, vibrant and distinctive, our 2012 Project Paso Cabernet Sauvignon features an aromatic nose filled with blackberry, sweet leather and undertones of smokiness. Hints of Belgian milk chocolate, nutmeg and black pepper add complexity to the supple fruit profile. Black currants and fresh fig compromise the core of this rich wine, while mocha-scented oak lingers throughout the wonderfully tannic finish. The mouth-watering acidity in the mid-palate will pair nicely with many cuisines. Enjoy with succulent braised short ribs, pan roasted veal chops with chanterelle mushrooms or lasagna with a hearty Bolognese sauce.

Vintage: Having weathered a challenging 2011 vintage in which an early frost reduced yields by as much as 50%, Paso Robles winemakers enjoyed a more “normal” growing season in 2012. A cool and dry spring was followed by a hotter than average summer compounded by a pair of late season heat waves that brought the grapes to perfect levels of ripeness. The sustained heat put water stress on the vines, which kept cluster sizes small while concentrating the flavors in the grapes that emerged. As a result, yields here were just average, unlike the rest of the state, but the quality of the fruit was impressive displaying rich color, deeply concentrated flavors, naturally balanced acidity and excellent structure.

2012 Old Vine Zinfandel 750ml 2-Pack

Our 2012 Project Paso Zinfandel shows its Paso Robles roots with explosive scents of plum, dark cherry, cracked white pepper and violet. As bold and rich as this wine is on the nose, it is similarly robust on the palate. Flavors of ripe raspberry, pomegranate and cinnamon bark invigorate the senses and deliver a lush softness to the palate. This wine offers a compelling blend of dark juicy fruit and floral tones. The 20% Syrah adds uniqueness to this wine, an edge of wild fruit that integrates seamlessly with the vanilla and dill notes coming from the 12 months American oak aging. The finish is impressively long, framed by light, dusty tannins.
This robust Zinfandel pairs well with full-flavored dishes, enjoy with an appetizer of cured meats and olives, a bbq pulled pork sandwich on a homemade sesame bun or pecan and bourbon bread pudding for dessert.

2011 Lonely Oak Red Blend 750ml 2-Pack

Our 2011 Lonely Oak Red opens with aromas of blueberry, molasses and sweet tobacco leaf. A wide variety of secondary aromas comes from the different grapes in this blend: hints of spice and boysenberry from Zinfandel, and blackberry notes from the Petite Sirah. Dark fruit flavors of black cherry and pomegranate from Malbec and Tempranillo abound on the palate, complemented by American oak influences of vanilla and toasted coconut. Medium-bodied, well-rounded and fruit driven, this approachable, appealing red blend is a sure crowd pleaser.

Appellation: Paso Robles wine country is centrally located between San Francisco and Los Angeles along California’s Central Coast. As one of California’s fastest growing wine regions and largest geographic appellation, the territory encompasses more than 26,000 vineyard acres and more than 200 wineries. With a greater day-to-night temperature swing than most other appellations in the golden state, distinct microclimates, diverse soils and a long growing season, Paso Robles is a unique wine region blessed with optimal growing conditions for producing premium and ultra-premium wines.

Unlike other surrounding appellations with deep, rich fertile valley soils, over 45 soil types are found in the Paso Robles AVA. These are primarily bedrock derived soils from weathered granite, older marine sedimentary rocks, volcanic rocks and younger marine sedimentary rocks of the Miocene age Monterey Formation featuring calcareous shales, sandstone or mudstone. Between the combination of climate and soils, wines from this region display vibrantly ripened fruit with dynamic flavor.
