solum so good

"Solum" is soil terminology and not, as we initially thought, a Lord of the Rings character.

Features

2009 Prime Solum, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, Brokenrock Vineyard 750ml 2-Pack

The 2009 Prime Solum Cabernet Sauvignon is the inaugural vintage of Bill Hill's single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from his Home Ranch, Brokenrock Vineyard.

Dense indigo.  Gobs of red and black fruit with hints of cedar and pipe tobacco wafting about.  Immense flavors greet the palate, carried through on a long wave of chewy phenolic richness.  Textbook power and finesse that can only be found in Napa Cab.  Prime Solum matches beautifully with most hearty fare and pairs particularly well with beef.

Vendor Details

Prime Solum

The name Prime Solum was inspired by the vernacular of Soil Science and that of Weather Science (climatology).  Prime Solum means “an ideal place to grow something”- in this case, Bill Hill’s Brokenrock Vineyard in Napa Valley...the ideal spot for world-class Cabernet Sauvignon.

Brokenrock Vineyard: Brokenrock, named for its remarkably rocky soil, is Bill Hill’s 48 acre home ranch.  Perched on a steep, western facing slope, establishing this vineyard was a daunting, but, in the end, an ultimately rewarding task.  The hillside location, blessed with high drainage and low fertility soil, consistently produces wines of unusual intensity and concentration.  The property, planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, is located on the Eastern ridge of Napa Valley at the foot of Atlas Peak, near Soda Canyon.

Bill Hill developed this vineyard in a true state-of-the-art fashion:  it includes high density planting (over 2000 vines per acre), with the best clones grafted onto low vigor root stock, all at northwest to southeast row orientation.  The resulting wines from Brokenrock exhibit intense color extraction ranging from deep garnet to purple-black, with rich ripe berry flavors and aromas.

About Bill Hill: In the early 1970’s, Bill, fresh out of college and newly returned from living in Europe, discovered the wine business. He was especially fascinated with the principle learned in Europe that “The Primary Determinant Of Wine Quality Is The Vineyard.” At this point Bill decided to build a career on the quest to create vineyards equal to the best in the world.

In 1974, this aspiring winegrower moved to Napa to develop his first vineyard. Over the next 39 years, by collaborating with and learning from many of the brightest thinkers in viticulture and enology, Bill created methodologies for the identification of ideal climates and soils, and for the design of state-of-the-art vineyards. Utilizing these lessons and methods, Bill and his associates designed and developed dozens of prime vineyards up and down the coasts of California, Oregon and Washington. Perhaps the strongest testimony as to the quality of these vineyards is drawn from the list of fine wine makers who have sourced fruit from vineyards designed by Bill.

While creating this vineyard legacy over 39 years, Bill and his associates found time to create a few wine brands including William Hill Winery, Bighorn Cellars and his current portfolio consisting of Expression, Tetra ( Napa Valley) and Prime Solum (Napa Valley).  These small production wines sourced from vineyards designed by Bill have received strong critical review and represent the culmination of a long journey.

Bill lives on Brokenrock Vineyard in Napa Valley with his wife Tina.
