2014 Petite Sirah, Family Vineyards, Dry Creek Valley
Purple and dense in the glass. Our Petite Sirah offers rich aromas of ripe plum, vanilla and toasty oak. It shows very deep and complex flavors of blackberries, black pepper spice and dark chocolate that are highlighted by mocha notes. Full bodied, there is nothing ‘petite’ about this wine, and it is well structured with firm tannins and a long finish. It has the structure to age well over many years. Decant if desired.

Family Vineyard Sources: This richly flavored grape, long known for its intense characteristics, has been grown side by side with Zinfandel in Dry Creek Valley for over 100 years. Petite Sirah has been planted on our vineyard since the early 1900s and used in our Zinfandel production as a key part of the blend. The “Family Vineyard” connection is with Carol Bushnell who is a third generation Pedroncelli; her vineyard has been a source of fruit since the 1940s. The resulting wine contains half the fruit from Estate vineyards and half from the Bushnell vineyard.

Winemaking: Harvested by the third week of September following a warm growing season with concentrated flavors and aromas while providing softer tannins. The result is a very rich Petite Sirah with a very good structure and balance. The fruit was crushed into stainless steel tanks where frequent pumping-over of the juice during fermentation allowed the young wine a substantial increase in extraction of flavor. The wine was aged for twelve months in American oak barrels, one third new oak balanced with seasoned barrels. A touch of Zinfandel was added to highlight the fruit components.

2014 Zinfandel, Mother Clone, Dry Creek Valley
Our Mother Clone is a classic Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel with aromas of black plum with a touch spice. Concentrated flavors of blackberry, black pepper and dark chocolate are framed by notes of smoky oak, cinnamon and vanilla. Well integrated flavors with smooth tannins and bright acidity are a hallmark of our style. Enjoy now or cellar for three to five years.

Mother Clone Vineyard Sources: Pedroncelli’s historic Zinfandel vineyards are located on the hillsides surrounding the winery, on the ranch originally purchased by John Pedroncelli Sr. in 1927 and planted to Zinfandel since 1904. These vines are head-pruned and hand-picked, a second generation vineyard cloned from the original “Mother” vines which were replanted block by block beginning in the early 1980s. The fruit from the remaining 100-year-old vines, although a small part, is included. We source estate vineyards, our Home Ranch and Bushnell Vineyard, as well as the nearby old vine Buchignani Vineyard.

Winemaking: 2014 was a warm growing season ripening the grapes to full maturity and resulted in good yields and quality. We harvested the vineyards the first week of September, a week earlier than the previous year. The vintage shows intense phenolics and mild acids resulting in a very structured wine with smooth texture. During fermentation, in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, the cellar crew performed daily pumpovers—extracting color and flavor from the skins. The wine was aged in American oak barrels for 12 months. A touch of Petite Sirah (10%) adds depth of color and brings structure to the Zinfandel fruit.

The year was 1927. President Calvin Coolidge captured the imagination of nobody. Babe Ruth hit home run after home run powered by little more than whiskey and sausage. And John Pedroncelli, Sr. bought a vineyard and winery in Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County. Since then, four generations of Pedroncellis have weathered Prohibition, wine booms and busts, and changing tastes. And they’re still a family-owned operation making acclaimed premium wines. Wherever you are now, Sultan of Swat and Silent Cal, this next glass is for you.
