Metal snobs and wine snobs both know one common truth: If it ends in a vowel, it'll probably rock.

Pedroncelli? Aw, yeah! I used to love them back in '85! They had that logo with the lightning bolts in place of the letter l's and that big hair guitarist. You remember, right? Wine Metal gave them their third album an unprecedented 9.2 flamin' axes!

Anyway, if you hear about Pedroncelli coming back through on some Monsters Of Wine tour, let me know, okay?

WAIT, THEY'RE ALREADY HERE!

2015 Merlot, Bench Vineyards, Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County
Aromas are enticing with hints of strawberry and baking spices. Flavors of black cherry, plum, and black pepper are showcased along with cinnamon notes and, in the background, a touch of vanilla and toasty oak. Medium bodied with round tannins follow through to a velvety finish. A beautifully balanced wine.

Bench Vineyards: The source for our Merlot comes from three blocks off of our estate vineyard located along Dry Creek Road from vineyard planted over 5 years beginning in 1990. Bench Vineyards, the name chosen for this wine, describes the natural terraces that flank Dry Creek Valley and rise gradually into the steep hills. Characterized by sloped topography and gravelly/rocky residual soils, the unique growing conditions combine to bring out the best in our Merlot.

Winemaker Notes: An early growing season and harvest due to drought conditions. Merlot was harvested the last week of August, about two weeks earlier than in non-drought years. The vintage shows intense phenolics and mild acids resulting in a very structured wine with smooth texture. The grapes were crushed into temperature controlled stainless steel tanks and cold soaked for 48 hours. Daily pumpovers during the fermentation gives a substantial increase in flavor and color. The young wine was transferred to small American oak barrels to age for 11 months in order to develop smoothness and complexity, giving the wine a subtle backbone of oak components.

2015 Sangiovese, Alto Vineyards, Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County
Aromas of raspberry and spice highlight our Sangiovese. Tart cherry, spicy pepper and cranberry flavors blend with a touch of vanilla and soft oak in the background. The finish is framed by bright acidity, medium body and soft tannins, making this a great choice for pairing with meals.

Vineyard Sources: This varietal is known as the backbone grape of Chianti. In honor of our heritage we planted this classic Italian varietal more than 20 years ago while seeking to add some unique wines to our line. We named the three separate sites, which are located on our home ranch, “Alto Vineyards” for the steep hillsides where the vineyards thrive. In the last few vintages, the maturity of the vines as well as the quality of the fruit from these hilltop sections is at their peak.

Winemaking: The 2015 vintage was harvested the first week of September, one week earlier than the previous vintage, due to drought conditions. Sangiovese grapes were showing great fruit aromas and flavors, good acidity and riper tannins than previous vintages. The vineyard blocks were handpicked and the fruit was crushed together creating a site-blend and transferred to stainless steel tanks where the juice was first cold soaked for 24 hours and then fermented for 10 days. The cap was pumped over periodically to enhance the color, flavor and intensity in the wine. The wine was aged in neutral American oak barrels for fifteen months and developed additional smoothness and complexity through this process. We aged the wine in seasoned barrels for less astringency which is associated with this grape and, in turn, will not overpower the balance in the finished wine.

2016 Chardonnay, Signature Selection, Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County
Pineapple, mango and peach aromas lead to juicy fruit flavors of ripe peach, sweet spices, pineapple, basically loaded with tropical fruit notes. The blend of the two Chardonnay lots adds both fruit forward qualities and a creamy texture. Highlighted by bright acidity, the wine finishes clean and refreshing. Drink now—no aging required.

In the Vineyard: Spring rain and perfect growing conditions during summer accelerated the ripening of the grapes and we began harvesting Chardonnay on September 16. The warm growing season with moderate temperatures offered ideal conditions for the grapes and, as a result, they had great natural acidity, intense quality and well-developed sugars. Sourced from four vineyards located at the southern end of Dry Creek Valley, they benefit from the cool microclimate and alluvial soils near the Russian River and produce wines of exceptional fruit and balance, culminating in Chardonnay of great character and quality.

Winemaking: At Pedroncelli Winery, the winemaking goal is simple: showcase the distinctive fruit of each varietal. This focus on fruit is particularly important in creating the style of Chardonnay that is our trademark. Due to the ideal harvest conditions and excellent quality this vintage has high intensity of tropical fruit aromas and flavors. We use stainless steel tanks to ferment 88% of the wine, capturing the fresh fruit flavors. The balance was separately barrel fermented in American oak barrels and aged for six months before being combined. The barrel fermentation and secondary or “malolactic” fermentation added some creamy notes giving a boost of complexity to the finished wine.
