we prefer "experienced."

It's wine from the upside-down side of the world! Do the vines grow downward into the soil in Argentina? Do they have to stomp the grapes to get the skins back on? Are the stems on top of their wine glasses? We have so many questions about winemaking down there - questions that must go unanswered, because they are so stupid.

Whatever the deal is, these wines are perfectly right-side-up by the time they get here. This red blend is sensuous and fruity as a couple dancing the tango in a pie factory. It's as earthy and something as some metaphor we can't think of, but don't hold our inarticulacy against it.

Maybe the right-side-up and upside-down halves of the world aren't so different. We can all agree that this six-pack is very delicious - or, as they would say in Argentina, snoᴉɔᴉlǝp ʎɹǝʌ.

Features

6 - 2014 Old Winery Red Blend, Mendoza, Argentina 750ml

On the pour, a brilliant ruby/garnet color fills the glass. An earthy and subtly fruity bouquet prefaces a burst of red fruit flavors on the palate. Additional notes of plum, blackberry, and toast finish softly with a hint of spice. Due to good concentration and tight, but integrated tannins, this wine can age an additional 2-3 years.

Old Winery Red, says it all!  This rustic, earthy wine is a great example of old school farming done with modern skill.  Malbec has been grown in this region of Argentina for hundreds of years.  The vines live approximately 700 meters above sea level, in the foothills of the Andes Mountains, lays the vineyards of Mendoza from which we source our grapes for this Malbec. As the signature varietal of Argentina, the Malbec vines are at home in the arid continental climate. Diurnal temperatures, or the difference between daytime highs and nighttime lows, are large here, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and develop flavors. The 2014 vintage was a challenging one in Mendoza due to record-breaking summer heat early in the season turning into above average rainfall. Harvest from the 8-year-old vines began in April. Traditional vinfication techniques in the presence of oak and additional aging contributed to the unique flavor profile of this wine.

AW Direct

Owner: Bruce Cunningham
Founded: 1987
Location: Santa Rosa, California

Founder and CEO, Bruce Cunningham, has been in the wine industry since 1987. After earning an undergraduate degree in Wine Marketing Studies at the University of Adelaide (South Australia), Bruce attended business school and has been involved in many aspects of the industry with a specific focus in packaging and production. After relocating to New York from Australia, he saw the need for custom labels of Australian wines for direct marketing needs in the USA. AW Direct (formerly Aussie Wine Direct), was born. This focus on a market segment was, at the time embryonic, and quickly led to further expansion of both suppliers and various segments of the wine market.

AW Direct relocated to California in 2004, and the team expanded, led by the formidable talents of his business partner, Kimberly Cunningham. Kim - an engineer, and techno-geek at heart - with her experience in running divisions of some of the world’s largest companies, was able to build systems to help create the efficiency needed to allow A W Direct to grow, but also compete in a wine world that can be inflexible and intolerant. As the company grew, Kim enhanced the business by developing a successful team of energetic, challenge-driven people who have the right “moxie” to keep our well-oiled machine running smoothly.
