Crying Fowl

There are many things that make a wine special, and what it pairs with is definitely one of them.

We sell a lot of wine here on Wine.Woot, so when we come across something new, we get excited. That's why when we read that the 2006 Muir's Legacy Merlot and 2006 Muir's Heritage Merlot both pair with "steak, rich pastas, or smoked foul," we could hardly believe our eyes.

Smoked foul? So all of these years, when we've been throwing away bad food because it got to an irreversible state of being unpairable, we've had another option? We can't help but feel like we've wasted so much.

If only we had known that there was a wine out there that could accompany foul food, we would have taken advantage of that foul soup, that foul cabbage, that foul apple, that foul fowl--wait a second...

Features

2006 Muir’s Legacy Merlot, Oak Knoll District Napa Valley 750ml 2-Pack

The Muir's Legacy 2006 Merlot is a wine made to go with food. It is medium bodied with a delightful balance of fruit, acid, and oak. Pair it with steak, rich pastas, or smoked foul. Chocolate is not out of the question.

The 2006 Merlot was harvested and crushed on September 27. The must was pumped to a SS tank and the yeast was added immediately. The tank was pumped over 2X each day until Oct 3 when the wine was pressed and transferred to a clean SS tank. The malo-lactic culture was added, mixed, and the wine transferred to barrels. The M/L conversion was complete by December 18. The wine was left on the lees until January 2007, then racked to clean barrels. The wine was racked to clean barrels again in July and Dec 2007. During the July racking very small amounts of cabernet franc and petit verdot were blended in. The wine was filtered on May 16 and bottled on May 20, 2008.

2008 Muir’s Heritage Merlot, Oak Knoll District Napa Valley 750ml 2-Pack

The Muir's Heritage 2008 Merlot is a wine made to go with food. It is made in a somewhat riper style than our prior releases and is therefore full bodied with a delightful balance of fruit, acid, and oak. Pair it with steak, rich pastas, or smoked foul. Chocolate is not out of the question.

The 2008 Merlot was harvested and crushed on September 29. The must was pumped to a SS tank and the D-254 yeast was added immediately. The tank was pumped over 3X each day until Oct 6 when the wine was pressed and transferred to a clean SS tank where the malo-lactic culture was added and mixed. The M/L conversion was complete by January 15 and the wine was then racked to clean barrels. The wine was racked to clean barrels again in July and Dec 2009. The wine was filtered on April 12 and bottled on April 14, 2010.

2007 Muir’s Legacy Bully! Red, Napa Valley Red Wine 750ml 2-Pack

The 2007 Bully! Red is a rich, full-bodied wine that pairs well with barbequed meats, heavy red sauces, and flavorful cheeses.  Its strong fruity nose is highlighted by only the slightest hints of oak, and the varietal characteristics of each of the components blend together perfectly.  Although this wine is made to drink now, it will age well.

Bully! Red is a proprietary blend that varies from year to year.  This vintage consists of 80% Merlot, 6.5% Petite Verdot, 5.5% Cabernet Franc, 3.5% Pinot, and the balance Primitivo and Cabernet Sauvignon.  This is the first year of 100% OKD fruit with the Cabernet Sauvignon coming from Orchard Vineyards, owned by Michael and his sister, Kristin.  The Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot come from the John Muir Hanna ranch, and the remaining varieties come from Bill & Claudia’s ranch.

Each variety was inoculated with yeast on the day of harvest and the juice was pumped over or punched down three times daily.  They were pressed when all measurable sugar was used.  The Merlot and Pinot went to tanks and the remainder to barrels for malo/lactic conversion. The wine was racked to clean barrels in March and the blend was made in August.

The wine was aged for a total of thirteen months in French oak barrels, six months prior to blending and 7 months after.  It was topped every month and racked once after blending.  A final racking preceded filtration and blending.   The wine was bottled on March 25, 2009.  640 cases were produced.

Vendor Details

Muir-Hanna Vineyards

Owners:
Direct descendants of John Muir
Location:
Napa, CA
Muir-Hanna Vineyards is a vineyard and winery in California’s famed Napa Valley, owned and operated by the direct descendants of John Muir, one of America’s most famous naturalists and conservationists. John Muir and his in-laws, the Strentzels, were also grape growers. True to our legacy, we practice sustainable agriculture in every phase of our operation and celebrate with every vintage the respect and connection that John Muir had with the glories of nature.

Our vineyards consist of 40 acres in the Oak Knoll District of the Napa Valley and produce chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, merlot, and a small amount of cabernet franc and petit verdot. We farm an additional 70 acres for neighbors and family, which adds semillon and sauvignon blanc. Our grapes have been prized components for such celebrated wineries as Beringer, Bernardus, Chateau Montelena, Darioush, Grgich Hills, Merryvale, Robert Mondavi, Opus One, and Silverado Vineyards. On the 150th anniversary of the planting of the Strenzel family’s first grapes, Muir-Hanna Vineyards offered its first release to the general public. Our grapes are grown with a minimum of chemical use, and our goal is harmonious co-existence with our ecosystem by enhancing our existing practices of sustainable agriculture and responsible conservation of resources.

A glass of Muir-Hanna wine is a taste of five generations of commitment to the beauty of the world around us.
