2012 Metz Road Pinot Noir, Monterey Estate 750ml 2-Pack

92 Points - Wine Enthusiast

Metz Road was created out of our desire to express the unique terroir of a single vineyard site. At Scheid Family Wines, we grow Pinot Noir on six of our estate vineyards. For Metz Road, we select the top vineyard block from each vintage to craft a vineyard-designated Pinot Noir that is genuine in style and exemplifies this complex, temperamental varietal.

TASTING NOTES: Aromas of ripe cherries, red fruit and blood orange are intermingled with subtle notes of vanilla and butterscotch. The palate is supple and layered with vivid flavors of black cherry and raspberry. Silky and elegant, the balance of tannin, acidity and intense fruit truly captures the beauty of Pinot Noir.

VINEYARD: Viento means wind in Spanish, an apt name that we bestowed upon this estate vineyard when we planted it in 1972. Located on the western side of the Salinas Valley at the mouth of the Arroyo Seco River, Viento Vineyard has the attributes associated with a premier winegrowing site. The micro-climate is noted for its moderate conditions and cool afternoon winds, ideal for a cool-climate varietal such as Pinot Noir. Evening coastal fogs in the spring and summer often linger until mid-morning the following day. This natural cooling effect slows photosynthesis and causes a unique lengthening of the growing season. We have planted the Pinot Noir at Viento to a mix of Dijon clones 115, 667, 777, Pommard, 828 and 943.

2012 GROWING SEASON: The 2012 growing season was picture-perfect. The spring months were temperate and uneventful, with no significant frost threats and ideal temperatures. Cool nights and overcast mornings followed by breezy afternoons made the summer months perfect for even ripening and good flavor development. Excellent harvest-time conditions allowed us to let the grapes hang until optimal ripeness was achieved.

2012 Metz Road Chardonnay, Monterey Estate 750ml 2-Pack

92 Points - Wine Enthusiast

Metz Road was created out of our desire to express the unique terroir of a single vineyard site. At Scheid Family Wines, we grow Chardonnay on eight of our estate vineyards. For Metz Road, we select the top vineyard block from each vintage to craft a vineyard-designated Chardonnay that is genuine in style and exemplifies this classic varietal.

TASTING NOTES: Juicy red apples, citrus and bright tropical fruit greet the nose, followed by lilting aromas of vanilla and toasty oak. The palate delivers concentrated apple and pear flavors with a distinct mineral component. Beautifully balanced, the well-integrated oak doesn’t overpower and a soft, full mouthfeel is complemented by a balanced acidity.

VINEYARD: Riverview Vineyard is our northernmost vineyard in Monterey County. Located two miles southeast of Soledad and adjacent to the Pinnacles, this 215-acre vineyard is nestled on a bench overlooking the Salinas River. The bench location aids in creating excellent air flow and the southwestern exposure maximizes available sunlight and allows the fruit to ripen slowly and evenly. The soils are well-drained and comprised of decomposed granite. Riverview is an ideal site for ultra-premium Chardonnay with a Burgundian flavor profile. The cooler climate produces a steelier style, with distinct notes of minerality.

After fermentation, the must was gently pressed into a stainless steel tank for settling, then racked to 100% French oak barrels (60% new) for 20 months.

“Quality is never an accident.  It is always the result of intelligent effort.” John Ruskin – artist, writer, philosopher (1819 – 1900)

To summarize the essence of a company in a one or two sentence mission statement is a daunting task. On the surface, our job at Scheid Vineyards is to supply our winery clients with the grapes they need at an acceptable price and at the highest quality possible. But it goes much deeper than that. For to supply a particular client with particular grapes implies an understanding of the specific wine and style being made and the knowledge of how to custom farm to achieve that profile. Say, a certain Sauvignon Blanc customer produces a grassy, herbaceous style of wine while another client aims for a more floral and fruitier character. Same grape, different approach. That’s where the “intelligent effort” part comes in.

Quality is a term that has been trivialized, used by purveyors from McDonald’s to Verizon to K-Mart. Genuine quality is harder to come by and does not mean simply well-made or acceptable. Real quality is that which is superior. It is the result of thought, analysis, communication, sweat and honest-to-God hard labor, succinctly stated by Mr. Ruskin as “intelligent effort”.

True quality is giving each customer no less than exactly what they want and need. It is never an accident.
