I see you over there. Smiling all ironically with your glass of Merleaux Merlot in hand. Wearing your Department of the Redundancy Department shirt. While that last part makes me want to punch you in the face a little, I can appreciate the creativity and wit behind your clever little name.
What I can appreciate more, however, is the wine itself. The Cajun spices. The rich, opulent full body with a smooth, lasting finish. The superbly blended mix of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, Barbera, Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot and Sangiovese. Nothing ironic. Nothing pretentious. Just a good wine with that certain je ne sais quoi. C'est délicieux, Non? No?

Merleaux Wine Company took the versatile merlot grape and added a version of Cajun spices in the form of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, Barbera, Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot and Sangiovese to give the wine its certain je ne sais quoi. The Merleaux Merlot has ripe cherry, hints of sweet raspberry, briary spices with a lush and lasting finish. An opulent Merlot with rich tannins that pairs with red beans and rice, etouffee, turducken, jambalaya, pasta, meats and chocolate. It is a rich, opulent, full bodied wine with a smooth lasting finish.

Merleaux Wine Company was created to showcase the versatile Merlot grape, which can have wonderful flavors and is very pleasant to drink by itself, share with friends and pair with food. They took a classic grape and added some of their favorite wines (the winemaker calls them her spice rack) to give the wine more complexity and depth of character. Merleaux Wine Company chose a Mardi Gras theme mask because Merleaux represents their version of Cajun spices and New Orleans flair and excitement. They were inspired by Cajun friends who make their etoufee and gumbo by starting with a base sauce (Merlot was used) and then added their favorite ingredients to make a great food item.
Merleaux Wine Company is owned by Lisa and Chris Mulcahy, owners of Sapphire Hill. Sapphire Hill Winemaker Tami Collins also makes the Merleaux wines.
