Oak is not the enemy.

Thanks, but no tanks!

In case you haven't noticed, there's a war on, people. No, it's not the Bitcoin devotees' desperate crusade to launder their pretend money in exchange for legitimate goods and services. And no, we're not referring to America's combat against obesity. Nor are we speaking of the global battle against bacteria we hear so much about on television. These are fruitless endeavors, friends. But there's one fight we mustn't ignore. We shan't relent. We cannot lose.

It is the battle against the barrel.

For years now, Chardonnay artists - Chardists, they're called - have spurned the noble oak. No one is quite certain why they avoid the coopers with such tenacity. Some postulate it's because the Chardonnay world spent the past decade dodging butterbombs. Others suggest it's because Chardists hate delicious flavors and don't want anyone to be happy.

Martellotto wants you to be happy.

That is why they're offering this masterful Chardonnay. It lived in French oak for 9 months - gestating in the belly of the barrel like a toasty, nutmeggy, boozy baby. And now it has been birthed and is ready for your consumption.

Alright, yes, we can see why that analogy might have you grimacing. Listen, you're not actually ingesting a baby. We're just trying to draw a parallel between the 9-month thing and the idea of giving renewed life to a method of aging and … you know what? We're bad with the metaphors. This is a Chardonnay. It sat in French oak. You should drink it. Stop reading and start buying!

Features

2011 Martellotto Chardonnay, Santa Barbara County, Sierra Madre Vineyard 750ml 3-Pack

The fruit in this wine is from the Sierra Madre Vineyard in the western part of Santa Maria Valley in Santa Barbara County. This is a very cool vineyard site that is windswept. Many outstanding producers source from this vineyard and I am pleased to be a part of this group.

Baked apples and pears in the nose follow through on the palate. The wine suggests a liberal use of French oak, but in fact, it is only 30% new French oak with the balance in older barrels. The wine bottled in July 2012, after only 9 months in oak because it was ready. A broad mouthfeel and yummy minerality combine with layers of vanilla, toast, and nutmeg sing into the finish. Consider this with any food that is prepared with butter.

Regarding his Chardonnay, Greg smiles when hearing from savvy tasters, "I don't like Chardonnay, but I like this Chardonnay."

Martellotto Wines began in a 17th century trullo, an iconic house in Alberobello (the place of pretty trees) in southern Italy. Uniquely constructed without mortar, topped with slate roofs, and recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site, the trullo is the recessed image in the 2006 vintage front labels. Greg Martellotto’s family has been making wine for generations, and his grandfather brought traditional winemaking practices to the U.S. when he immigrated to Ellis Island in 1909.

Greg’s unique skill set includes: winemaking experience in California, Italy and Mexico, launching several wine brands, building a successful import/distribution company and developing long-term relationships with growers, winery owners, and clients. Greg’s intention is to make remarkable wines of consequence, consistency, value, and varietal expression. A vineyard first philosophy focuses efforts on farming (including biodynamic and sustainable agriculture) with gentle handling in the winery and minimal intervention. Martellotto wines are allocated, vineyard designate wines that are a pleasure to share.
