2010 Marilyn Merlot, Napa Valley 750ml 3-Pack

Beyond the striking label, the 2010 Marilyn Merlot offers much, much more:
The long cool growing season of 2010 in Napa Valley yielded Merlot wines of lovely balance and elegance. 2010 Marilyn Merlot is completely ready to enjoy on release and offers the promise of graceful aging as well. A great conversation piece at dinner, a wine that lives up to its promise of Napa glamour in a glass.

The photo portrait of Marilyn Monroe in a red dress set against a black background is from the last photo session with Milton Greene in 1957, and it is as playful as it is provocative -- qualities Marilyn often combined in films and in life.

2009 Marilyn Merlot, Napa Valley, 25th Anniversary Release 750ml 3-Pack

Since making its glamorous entrance into the wine world in 1987, this show stopping wine has attracted admiration from wine lovers and critics nationwide. In celebration of Marilyn Merlot's 25th year, the Napa Valley winery is pleased to announce the September release of a special 2009 vintage of their highly acclaimed wine. Presented in a silk-screen printed bottle featuring an alluring photograph of Marilyn Monroe and her embossed silver signature, this wine is sure to capture everyone's attention.

"We are delighted to commemorate 25 years of success in the wine business. Although Marilyn's career was short lived, her legacy is eternal. This vintage is a celebration of the similar timeless appeal of our wines, the lasting vitality of our business, and the perpetual quality of Napa Valley's outstanding fruit," says Bob and Donna Holder, founders of Marilyn Merlot.

The special edition 2009 Marilyn Merlot will be released in September, just in time for the holidays. An elegant bottle of Marilyn Merlot will make a fun and festive gift and keepsake for wine connoisseurs, collectors and Monroe fans alike. Its personality and full-bodied flavor are guaranteed to lend style and spice to any holiday celebration.

"We had an extraordinary growing season in Napa Valley during 2009, with most of our harvest occurring before the late October rains. Sensational fruit means a quality wine, and we are delighted that our 2009 Marilyn Merlot will mark our 25th anniversary celebration," comments John McKay, winemaker for Marilyn Merlot for the past 10 years.

In the late 1970s, Bob and Donna Holder left behind their city lives, and purchased a small plot of land on the outskirts of Rutherford, California.  As longtime wine connoisseurs with successful backgrounds in the art and CPA business, the Holders became home winemakers in 1980, producing unforgettable wines with equally unforgettable labels, created by their friend and the professional illustrator, Denys Cazet.  The “Maneater Cannibal Sauvignon” and “Thin Zin” were instant hits.  Their success prompted the Holders to become further involved in the wine business, investing in one of their most beloved wineries, and beginning the production of Merlot in the early 1980s.  From 1983 to 1985, the Holders purchased and crushed a ton of Merlot grapes in their home’s carport every year.  In 1985, they bottled their first Merlot, although it did not have a label.  One evening, while drinking the Merlot with Denys Cazet and his wife Donna, the group began brainstorming clever labels for the wine.  It was Donna who came up with the winning name: Marilyn Merlot.  Putting his artistic talents to good use, Denys subsequently designed the label.
As their friends raved about their wine, the Holders decided to produce it commercially.  After receiving permission from Marilyn Monroe’s estate to use her name and image on the wine, the Holders purchased the merlot juice for the 1985 vintage Napa Valley Merlot, and bottled it with a newly revised label by Charles House.  Publically released in 1987, the wine quickly sold out.  It was show time for Marilyn Merlot.

Since that time, Marilyn Merlot began making its own wines.  The original winemaker, Alan Phillips, was followed by John McKay, who has now been with the company for over a decade.  Marilyn Merlot has continued to grow over the years, with the involvement of the Holder’s two sons.  The Holder’s loyalties extend beyond their family, to their company’s icon, Marilyn Monroe.  Although the company has been asked to create wines in honor of other celebrities, it remains dedicated exclusively to the enduring Hollywood icon.  As the Holders remarked, no one can capture the glamour of our merlot quite like Marilyn Monroe.”
