6 - 2015 Mare di Vetro Aglianico, Italy
2015 Mare di Vetro Aglianico, Italy
Mare di Vetro- Sea of Glass in Italian, is the perfect name for this beautiful, dry Italian red wine, because the grapes are grown near the Adriatic Sea. In spite of the hottest July on record, the 2015 vintage showed both excellent quality and high yields across Italy, moving the country back to the number one spot in production worldwide. In Puglia, Aglianico vines flourish in sandy soil and the hot, Mediterranean climate. Approximately 100 meters of elevation and sea breezes helped the vines escape too much heat. For this wine, the slow-ripening grapes developed concentrated flavors, remaining on the 15-year-old vines into October. After which they macerated for 10 days prior to being pressed off. This extended time allowed all of the color from the grape skins to be absorbed into the juice, resulting in a wine of extraordinarily dark color.
Deep, ruby and burgundy in color, this wine is bold and dark. Notes of black cherry, plum, and cranberry give way to earthy notes of white pepper, smoke, and cocoa. High in tannins and acid, it can age upwards of 5 years.
Food Pairing
This wine is full-bodied and tannic, making it an ideal pairing with beef brisket, portabella mushrooms or hard, sharp cheeses such as Asiago.
