The Taste Of History

When it comes to honoring one’s roots… well, a good wine knows where it came from.

For a winery to be doing it right, it has to balance the old and the new. Yes, there are always flavors yet to be discovered, but one can’t just turn one’s back on the past, can one? We’re told Jim Rickards doesn’t. And it’s from his salute to the past that we get this “mother-daughter reunion” pack, these four bottles of 2009 J.Rickards Alexander Valley Zinfandel.

The first two bottles are the 2009 J.Rickards Ancestor Selections Zinfandel. Planted sixteen years ago in the style of the original California Zins, this vintage honors the history of winemaking in a slightly modern way. Juicy boysenberry, deep raspberry, the flavors of spice cake and white pepper across the finish; in this wine, you’ll find the “daughter” with her modern sensibility. But don’t forget, she’s still respectful of the past.

The next two, of course, are the “mother” of a different generation. The 2009 J. Rickards Old Vine Zinfandel comes from the Old Vine Zinfandel vineyard, growing steady and quiet since 1908. In these grapes lie the history of Alexander Valley wines. Ripe blackberry and raspberry, plums and gingerbread and mocha, that’s what you’ll find here. The 2012 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition even scored it a Double-Gold, proving this wine isn’t just paying respect, it’s forging a path of its own.

Within these four bottles of 2009 J.Rickards Alexander Valley Zinfandel lie a family tree of wine. Learn from them. The foundation they lay today will be built upon tomorrow.

Passion . . . no pretense

Welcome to J. Rickards Vineyards and Winery. We are a family-run operation of both wine grape farming and wine production, located at the northern end of the Alexander Valley in Sonoma County. Owned and operated by Jim and Eliza Rickards, the Vineyards have been planted over the past 30 years, augmenting the original 1908 Zinfandel vines. The Winery started in 2005, born out of the encouragement of friends who have enjoyed the small lots of hand-crafted wine we have been making since 1991.

We produce several varietals that grow especially well on the diverse blocks throughout our 60 acres. Zinfandel, both from the old vines and new plantings of old clones (see Vineyards) is bold, spicy... Petite Sirah is handled gently to soften its tannic nature, bottled on its own and blended with the Zinfandel, adding its unique character…. Malbec from the lower pond area, a stunning varietal... A blend we call Five Sisters is made from the traditional Bordeaux varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petite Verdot and Malbec, all estate grown.

The majority of the grapes we harvest go to other renowned wineries in the area. Our first offering was about 150 cases from the 2004 and 2005 vintages, growing to 5000 cases over the next few years.
