The Right Idea

Attention uninspired people: I have tasted Inspiration and it is great.

First thing’s first: despite what you might have heard, you don’t get struck by Inspiration; you drink it. You need to do the work: uncork the bottle, pour it into a glass, sniff it, and send it down the hatch.

Second, Inspiration can vary in style and vintage. Sometimes it can taste like a 2010 Pinot Noir with flavors of earth, dark cherries, and leather. Other times, you’ll swear it’s a 2010 Chardonnay with apple blossoms, vanilla, citrus with a hint of toasted oak. But no matter what kind of Inspiration you find, one thing’s for sure: it’s always delicious.

Now, convincing your boss that you need a glass of Inspiration Vineyards wine in order to work efficiently – that’s a little tricky.

Features

2010 Chardonnay, Estate, Russian River Valley 750ml

You’ll find flavors of green apple and loquat followed by a citrus finish with balanced acidity. From our own vineyard in the Russian River Valley, this wine was made entirely in stainless steel, following the methods and traditions found in Chablis, France. Warm days and cool nights naturally develop good acid, making this an ideal food wine. During fermentation, we split this into two separate lots, each using its own yeast in order to create a variety of flavor aromatics to work with at blending.

2010 Chardonnay, Estate Reserve, Russian River Valley 750ml

On the nose, apple blossoms, vanilla, citrus with a hint of toasted oak. On the palate, you’ll discover crisp green apple and butterscotch. Balanced with good acidity, this wine is meant for food and will age for many years.

From our own vineyard in the Russian River Valley, our reserve was harvested over a period of three weeks. We then fermented this in five separate lots using two different cultured yeasts and one natural yeast. What resulted was a fantastic selection of wines to choose from in putting together this blend. Using 10% new French Oak, we then refined our lots further. Our reserve is truly very special, because it is a blend of our best barrels to create a style that is reminiscent of the style of Chardonnay produced in Northern Burgundy.

2010 Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley, Sonoma County 750ml

This vineyard is directly behind our Chardonnay vineyard on Olivet Road. For years I would ask my neighbor if I could buy this fruit, because besides our Chardonnay and Old Vine Zinfandel, I was able to keep almost daily progress on its growth and development.

Made in a very Burgundian style, you’ll find flavors of earth, dark cherries, and leather accompanied by a nice toasty finish; make this the perfect food wine, especially since it also has great acidity. For the time being, this is the last vintage of Pinot Noir that we’ll be producing under the Inspiration label in order to focus more on Rhone varieties.

Vendor Details

Inspiration Vineyards and Winery

Owners:
Barbara & Jon Phillips
Founded:
2002
Location:
Sonoma County, CA

Barbara and I moved to Sonoma County 10 years ago because of our passion for great wine.  After teaching about wine for 15 years, I was driven to follow my heart and become a wine maker.  All of our friends kept telling us we were an Inspiration because we followed our dreams.  Through hard work and determination, I was able to leave my fulltime corporate life three years ago and focus on making fantastic, balanced, food-friendly wines and offer them at a reasonable price.

Today, our winery produces approximately 1500 cases of wine annually; our average lot sizes are around 200 cases and can be as small at 20 cases, like our 100 year old “front yard” Zinfandel.
