Horse Heaven Hills: Naturally bounded on the North by the Yakima Valley appellation and on the South by the Columbia River, Horse Heaven Hills was officially designated as an AVA in 2005. Its proximity to the Columbia River and a distinctive topography moderate the extreme temperatures of the area and provide steep, south-facing slopes for quick-draining loamy soils.

Bone-dry deserts, upriver winds from the Columbia River and long sunny days make the perfect conditions for growing wine grapes in the Horse Heaven Hills. Fine tannins and deep, concentrated fruit flavors are characteristics that put our region on the map - synonymous with some of the most acclaimed wines in the Northwest.

2012 Alder Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon, Horse Heaven Hills

  • 91 Points, Wine Enthusiast
  • 90 Points, Stephen Tanzer

Dark ruby and garnet core with a crimson rim. Concentrated and intense; nuances of cocoa, forest floor, truffles and red currant back up dark cherry and kirsch. A slight capsicum note gives this wine its varietal thumbprint without being overbearing. Round and generous with great flavor intensity and a persistent finish, this wine is seductive and polished.

Alder Ridge Vineyard: First planted in 1997, Alder Ridge is one of the state's most coveted vineyards, on a rolling plain set atop a steep bluff above the Columbia River. Natural wind and air drainage protects the vines from the dramatic weather changes, both in the summer and winter. Alder Ridge is known for exceptional long hang time, with a moderating effect of the river on summer heat spikes and winter freezes, giving the Cabernet for which the vineyard is known tougher skins and firm tannins.

2013 Canoe Ridge Reserve Cherry Street Red Wine, Horse Heaven Hills, Columbia Valley
This fruit-forward, full-bodied blend offers aromas and flavors of cassis, blackberry, plum and a hint of cedar on the lingering finish. Pair with grilled burgers, pan-seared steaks and tomato-sauced dishes.

2015 Six Prong Cabernet Sauvignon by Alder Ridge, Horse Heaven Hills
A ripe and expressive style, aromas and flavors of juicy black cherry and red currants carry through the palate with full body, finishing with a persistent, almost sweet fruit finish with hints of herbal, clove-filled oak notes.

Vineyard Profile: This renowned vineyard has 27 geologically formed benches, created nearly 20,000 years ago by the Great Missoula Floods.  These sun-drenched, mostly south-facing benches start at an elevation of 1,400 feet and step all the way down to the shore of the Columbia River.  Microclimates abound, suiting many varieties, and the up-sweeping winds benefit the vines by controlling pests, keeping the canopy naturally thinned and contributing to well-structured tannins (by toughening grape skins).  The sandy soils promote deep rooting and the river serves as a natural insulator against winter and summer extremes.

Vintage Background: The 2015 Washington state harvest will go down in history as the vintage where parts of the state persevered above irrigation restrictions, several 100+ degree days and a few late-season regional wildfires that spared growers from any problems. It will also be noted as the year with a record surge in growing degree days, a harvest that started early and ended by mid-October, and a bounty that surpassed the record 2014 Washington harvest.  Fruit flavors from this harvest are concentrated and intense, with moderate berry size, excellent phenolic ripeness and balanced acidity.

Canoe Ridge Vineyard

Visit the Canoe Ridge Vineyard website

Canoe Ridge Vineyard focuses primarily on Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The estate vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA was first planted in 1989, followed by the opening of its Walla Walla winery, established in 1994. The name comes from the vineyard site on the eastern side of Washington adjacent to the Columbia River. Famed explorers Lewis & Clark named this crest of land; they thought the ridge looked like an overturned canoe. In its two decades of winemaking, Canoe Ridge Vineyard has earned more than 40 scores of 90 points or better.
