Cage-Free, No Added Hormones

Your grapevine's name is Frances. When she's not producing fruit, she enjoys racquetball and foreign films.

From beef to blueberries, the idea of that you should know where your food comes from is now conventional wisdom among people who make a big deal about food. But wine drinkers were into that before it got big.

Take these vineyard-designate reds from Highflyer. It's just not that big a deal to know that the dense, intense 2007 Syrah sprang from Star Lane Vineyard, the highest, warmest vineyard in the Santa Ynez Valley. Or that the 2009 Pinot Noir got its bright, fruity character from the cool, well-drained Doctor's Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands.

You'll never get this level of detail about your oranges or your coffee - much less about your Cocoa Puffs. Hell, Highflyer can even tell you what the weather was like, too. Hipsters? Nope, just winemakers.

Features

2007 Highflyer Syrah, Star Lane Vineyard, Clone 877, Santa Ynez Valley 750ml 2-Pack

This intense, inky-hued wine displays expressive aromas of crushed blackberries, dark chocolate and exotic floral notes. It is deep, dark and densely brooding, as flavors of plum, mocha and licorice fill the palate, finishing with persistent notes of supple tannins and gravelly finesse.

Vineyard: Star Lane Vineyard (Santa Barbara), located at the far eastern end of the Santa Ynez Valley, is both the warmest and the highest elevation vineyard in the appellation. The 4,000 acre property is planted to 237 acres of grapevines. Backing up to the lower slopes of the San Rafael Mountains, Star Lane features a unique range of weathered sand, gravel and alluvial cobbles over a clay/loam subsoil, an ideal for location for Syrah.

Weather: The 2007 growing season is one of classic character; late Spring rains delayed bud-break and the harvest was approximately two to three weeks later than “average” in getting started. Following a July heat spell, temperatures moderated to provide very even-ripening conditions that persisted through a beautiful Indian summer in October.

2009 Highflyer Pinot Noir Doctor's Vineyard, Santa Lucia Highlands 750ml 2-Pack

This vintage shows bright fruit focused flavors and the purity of cool climate Pinot Noir aromatics, with tiers of concentrated young cherry, cola, raspberry jam and red plum. Fleshy and full-bodied, finishing with light tannins and a lingering finish.

Vineyard: Doctors Vineyard is in the heart of the Santa Lucia Highlands. This intensely managed property has well-drained soils of sandy loam and gravel. We sourced three clones, from three small vineyard blocks to complete our 2009 blend: 828 (richness), Calera (brightness) and Swan (texture). Each of these vineyard blocks are planted between 500 and 900 feet above sea level.

Weather: The 2009 growing season brought us great density, acidity, and sweet tannin. Crop levels were slightly above normal, producing a fruit focused high quality wine. Temperatures in mid-August were mild with less fog and one warm spell that pushed sugar levels and added in tannin development. Ideal weather persisted, slowly developing the flavors into the perfect intensity.

Location:
Napa Valley, St. Helena

The Somerston property is the foundation of everything we do. The property is 1628 acres of natural beauty, with over 200 acres of sustainably farmed vineyards, winery, and a developing ranch and farm Our two valleys are split by the highest point on Sage Canyon Road, topping out at almost 2800 feet in elevation, the valley floors rest at 800 feet above sea level. Somerston is 8 miles east of Rutherford east of the Chiles Valley appellation in Napa Valley. Its diverse soils, microclimates, and exposures are perfect for growing world-class grapes. This remarkable property has several spring fed lakes, natural soda springs, and several acres dedicated to farming of fruit trees, vegetables, herbs, and gardens.

Our Vineyard has over 200 acres planted on elevations of 850 to 2400 feet above sea level. Its cool nights, low morning temperatures, late morning fog and warm afternoon temperatures give our vineyards a slow and even ripening. The vineyard is divided into 87 individual blocks that represent the various soils (alluvial fans, silty clay and fractured shale, and Akin). For years, the fruit from Somerston has been purchased by some of Napa Valley's most renowned winemakers including David Ramey, Heidi Barrett, and David Phinny, plus a handful of well-respected wineries Balcom Family Cellars, Biale, Caymus, Duckhorn, Orin Swift, Pahlmeyer, and Viader.

Craig Becker is a founding member of Somerston. He is a seasoned winemaker and has worked with a wide range of varieties planted at some of California’s top hillside vineyards. Driven by his strong interest in plant and soil science Craig attended the University of California at Davis studying plant physiology, hydrologic science, enology, and viticulture. It is Craig’s artisan approach to winemaking and his extensive knowledge in viticulture that enables him to create superb wines from a wide range of varieties and sites. As General Manager of Somerston, Craig oversees all aspects of the business from viticulture, winemaking, sales and marketing, finance and business development.

At Somerston we believe in sustainable farming and the intrinsic quality of our land. Our property’s magnificent valleys, steep hillsides and infinite vistas have inspired our wine and our purpose. Somerston is a place of natural splendor that must be seen to be believed.
