2009 Primitivo, Los Chamizal Vineyards, Sonoma Valley 750ml 4-Pack
Primitivo is a varietal akin to Zinfandel and has bright fruit flavors that are forward on your palate and are spicy and reminiscent of wild strawberries. The wine finishes with a rich fullness on the back of your palate.
Vineyards: The name Chamizal was written on early maps of the hill lands just north of the town of Sonoma. It refers to the hardwood bushes that cover many parts of the Mayacamus Mountains. When we cleared the land we built terraces in the rocky soil to hold the newly planted grape plants. Primitivo is a grape with heritage similar to that of Zinfandel which had ripened slightly earlier so we planted it on a hillside facing the North East in a cooler environment.
Vintage: Vintage 2009 saw below average rainfall and the bud break occurred late in March. While there were a few heat spikes, the healthy canopies sheltered the crop, and the fruit was harvested beginning in late September. Due to the lower rainfall the individual berry size was smaller resulting in a smaller crop, but the flavors were intense as a result of the decrease in berry skin to juice ratio.

The hills beyond the historic town of Sonoma embrace a small valley called Chamizal where grape vines are planted on terraces carved from the rocky slopes. It was here in 1974 that Peter Haywood began planting vineyards that he named Los Chamizal, Spanish for the thickets of hardwood that covered the land. By 1980 Haywood Winery produced its first wines from grapes that could adapt to the rugged terrain. Today Haywood Estate Winery emphasizes single vineyard Zinfandels, its Italian relative Primitivo, as well as Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay, each wine demonstrating the unique site characteristics of their location within the vineyard. In addition to the current Estate portfolio, grape varieties farmed on the 90 producing acres of los Chamizal Vineyards include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petite Verdot, Malbec, Grenache, Mourvedre, and Syrah. Current Annual Production is 5,000 Cases
