Express Your Appreciation

Have you ever howled at the Harvest Moon? I have. But I think I may have eaten some bad cheese.

I'm one of those guys. When I want something, I go after it.  And if I happen to find your bubblegum and rose potpourri aroma particularly titillating, I'm gonna let you know.

You think Burt Reynolds scored Loni Anderson by twiddling his thumbs? Of course not. Heck! Hugh Hefner didn't become the world's foremost playboy by sitting idly on the sidelines. He saw what he wanted and then reached out and grabbed it! Figuratively speaking, of course. OK, probably literally in his case but you get the point.

And that point is, if you enjoy a wine with a juicy mouthfeel with a light yet electric salmon color hue, don't be shy about it. Shout it from the rooftops. Just make sure you do it at a reasonable hour, otherwise the neighbors are probably gonna be upset.

2010 Harvest Moon Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley 750ml 3-Pack

The 2010 Estate Pinot Noir is stunning. In classic Harvest Moon style, the color is pale and light, but it sure doesn’t lack in aromas. At first, a delicate herbal tea profile comes out with perfumed rose petals and candied red fruit. This wine has a juicy wet spicy finish. We feel these approximately 400 cases represent the elegant side of the cool-climate Russian River Valley.

Winemaker’s Notes: 2010 was by far the most challenging growing season in my ten years in the biz, in fact most of the “old schoolers” said 2010 was the worst they’d seen. Between a cold, rainy spring and downright cool summer, the clusters began to rot early on the vine. In order to dry out the inner canopy and expose what sun was available that season, most growers pulled leaves on the afternoon side of the foliage canopy. Bad mistake because on August 17th, the Russian River Valley and greater Sonoma County experienced a record heat spell with temp’s rising above 105 F. I literally watched 50% of my crop sunburn.  Ultimately, what we did harvest was very very high quality; it just wasn’t that much quantity. These 20 barrels were aged for 16 months on mostly neutral, mature oak casks.

The Harvest Moon: the moon at and about the period of fullness that is nearest to the autumnal equinox.  In the legend of the Harvest moon, it is said that all full moons have their own special characteristics based primarily on the whereabouts of the ecliptic in the sky at the time of year that these moons are visible.

Harvest Moon Estate and Winery was founded on growing, producing and bottling world-class Russian River Valley wine in a balanced, elegant style. Our premise is that Russian River Valley Zinfandel can be just as layered and complex as any Pinot Noir or Bordeaux variety in the world and receive the same respect.  The Pitts family has grown quality grapes in the Russian River Valley since 1976. In 2000, son Randy reverse migrated from San Francisco back to Sonoma County to assume the farming responsibilities at the family's modest nine-acre ranch. In conjunction with lessons on farming by his Dad and a few viticulture/enology courses at the local junior college, Randy made a barrel of homemade Zinfandel off the ranch's back block which turned out exceptionally tasty. Quickly concluding that properly farmed and judiciously fermented, Zinfandel has great capabilities of being California's own wine nobility.  The growers-turned winemakers birthed their inaugural vintage in 2002 and look forward to making their Zinprint on the winescene for decades to come.

In addition to growing Zinfandel, Harvest Moon also hand crafts small amounts of Russian River Valley Gewürztraminer, Pinot Noir and Dry Creek Cabernet Sauvignon.
