Hello, Winers!

Welcome to April. We're well into 2014 now. It's going nicely, except for the awful parts. And hey, for those awful parts, at least there's wine.

It's good for the awesome parts of 2014, too.

Features

2012 Dry Gewürztraminer, Estate, Russian River Valley 750ml 2-Pack

Ripe summer melon and spiced honeysuckle aromas with a light creaminess on the mid, followed with a long juicy cantaloupe blossom. This refreshing dry Gewurztraminer has all the bells and whistles of a world-class Chardonnay. Great for those hot summer evenings!

This fruit comes from a 35 year-old vineyard off our Russian River Valley Home Ranch. The cane-pruned vines ensure a low yield of approximately 2.2 tons/acre which creates incredibly intense aromas and flavor profiles. Unlike traditional Gewürztraminers, this wine was fermented to a bone-dry level and was introduced to malolactic bacteria and a few weeks of new French oak, lending the light-bodied wine a creamy mouth feel, yet preserving the refreshingly dry crisp flavors.

2012 Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley 750ml 2-Pack

We feel this small production represents an elegant approach to an elegant variety…Russian River Valley Pinot Noir.

In classic Harvest Moon style, this Pinot Noir is packed full of spicy, red floral fruit and deep rose aromas. Gobs of candied cherry and pomegranate fill the mouth. The finish is long and juicy begging for another sip. Cellar 3-5 years.

2009 Zinfandel, Russian River Valley 750ml 2-Pack

With two full years in the bottle, this neighborhood blend of 100% Zinfandel is ready to drink with spicy nutmeg and soft cherry notes. Earthy coriander skirts around the glass, while the medium body of wild plum and holiday spices fill the mouth graciously. Structured, yet balanced with juicy acidity. Ready to drink for the holidays.

The 2009 season was framed by cool weather and good development in the vineyard. The fruit gained a high concentration of flavor as well as good acidity. The heat spells were moderate, the cold troughs were shallow, and the bunches looked picture perfect falling into the bins. The season was perfectly uneventful until Monday, October 12th when the greater Sonoma County region saw nearly 4” of torrential rain!!! The last time Sonoma saw this much rain so early in October was 1961. Needless to say, farmers and winemakers alike were scrambling to get as much fruit off the vine and into the fermentors as possible. Fortunately, we only had our dessert wine left on the vine, which benefits from a little mold.

This was a vintage that rewards a winemaking style like Harvest Moons’, as we pick our grapes earlier than others, seeking lower sugars in the grape, and ultimately, lower alcohols and more delicate, juicy flavors in our wines. Farming is a humbling experience.

2011 RandyZin Zinfandel, Sonoma County 750ml 2-Pack

This Zinfandel and Sangiovese blend begins with earthy subtle white pepper and red floral tea notes. Bright, youthful boysenberry followed by the juicy tart strawberry leaves you feeling satisfied. We recommend pairing with the first BBQ of spring. Cellar for 5 years. Always decant!
The RandyZin represents our desire in Sonoma County to truly enjoy life and not take ourselves too serious. Feeling a little Randy today?

The 2011 RandyZin is a compilation of 92% Zinfandel and 8% Sangiovese from fruit grown in the Russian River Valley and Sonoma County. The Sangiovese comes from Alexander Valley and brings lower acid levels than the Zinfandel, which allows the blend to be able to drink now, yet can lie down for 3-5 years.

2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Dry Creek Valley, Buchignani Vineyard 750ml 2-Pack

The aromas are bright with earthy green olive and exotic spices on the nose; it is almost reminiscent of spiced, Mexican hot cocoa. This wine is structured with slight tannins gripping and releasing ever so quickly. There is a green olive note that playfully skirts around the edges and continues on to the finish. This is a beautiful old style, elegant Cabernet.

Grower & Winemaker’s Notes: The 2010 growing season was colder-than-normal.  The Spring started out warm with a great bud break and fruit set, then the summer weather patterns turned cold and foggy.  This vintage would be considered a “lean” year.  In August we had a heat spell that damaged many of the ripening clusters forcing growers to drop the burnt fruit which in the long run made for additional complexities and layers in our wines.

Our Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% Cab from a single vineyard nestled up against the mountainside in the heart of the Dry Creek Valley.

2010 Sonoma Harvest Red Wine, Sonoma County 750ml 2-Pack

Our 2010 Sonoma Harvest was compiled from fruit mostly grown in the Dry Creek Valley.  Green Olive, cedar, cinnamon and spice are predominate in this wine.  Be patient with this beauty.  8-10 years from bottling date.

Desiring a red wine that exhibited balance was a motivating factor in seeking out great vineyards and producing this blend of Sonoma County’s best. We feel this is a play with all key actors present. The Cab Sauv, Franc and Merlot from various valley floor blocks in the Dry Creek bring the dusty, dried herbaceousness inside the glass. We certainly must mention the brief yet profound appearance from cool climate Russian River Valley Petite Sirah.

We crafted this rare table wine with your dinner table in mind…

The Harvest Moon: the moon at and about the period of fullness that is nearest to the autumnal equinox.  In the legend of the Harvest moon, it is said that all full moons have their own special characteristics based primarily on the whereabouts of the ecliptic in the sky at the time of year that these moons are visible.

Harvest Moon Estate and Winery was founded on growing, producing and bottling world-class Russian River Valley wine in a balanced, elegant style. Our premise is that Russian River Valley Zinfandel can be just as layered and complex as any Pinot Noir or Bordeaux variety in the world and receive the same respect.  The Pitts family has grown quality grapes in the Russian River Valley since 1976. In 2000, son Randy reverse migrated from San Francisco back to Sonoma County to assume the farming responsibilities at the family's modest nine-acre ranch. In conjunction with lessons on farming by his Dad and a few viticulture/enology courses at the local junior college, Randy made a barrel of homemade Zinfandel off the ranch's back block which turned out exceptionally tasty. Quickly concluding that properly farmed and judiciously fermented, Zinfandel has great capabilities of being California's own wine nobility.  The growers-turned winemakers birthed their inaugural vintage in 2002 and look forward to making their Zinprint on the winescene for decades to come.

In addition to growing Zinfandel, Harvest Moon also hand crafts small amounts of Russian River Valley Gewürztraminer, Pinot Noir and Dry Creek Cabernet Sauvignon.
