2012 Hansen Cellars Old Vine Zinfandel, Lodi 750ml 6-Pack
This Zinfandel shows aromas of ripe plum with hints of raspberry and blueberry. Crisp acidity promotes a balanced mouth feel followed by a smooth and rich finish.
Vineyard: The grapes come from one of the most highly respected and reputed Zinfandel growers in the Lodi Appellation – the most famous production region in California for Zinfandel production. The vines range in age from 20 to 85 years old.
Growing Practices: The majority of the grapes come from vineyards that are on a traditional, and most, favorable Head-pruned system. The head prune vine focuses the plants energy into the fruit with yields that are good, but small enough to concentrate the flavors of the grapes. The Lodi region is famous for its deep and rich soils as well as temperatures that are very warm in the day, while cooling by 35-40 degrees in the evening.
Tasting Notes: The nose is filled with blackberries, raspberries, and jammy dark berry fruit, with a hint of vanilla notes. The wine is full-bodied, but not overly ripe, and has layers of flavor on the palate, while finishing with good acidity. The jammy fruit lingers on the palate.
Specs
Harvest: The vineyard was harvested by hand in the early morning hours while the grapes are still cool and crisp. The grapes were picked at 24.5 – 25.5 degrees of brix, which provided outstanding balance between full ripeness of fruit and acidity.
The Blend: Most winemakers use the ancient art of blending to achieve greater balance, depth and character in the wine. In California, the law states that a wine must consist of a minimum 75% of the varietal shown on the label. This Old Vines Zinfandel is blended in the following proportions:
Zinfandel 85%, Petite Sirah 10%, Red Blend (oak aged) 5%
Vinification Process: The grapes were fermented on their skins for 6 days. They were then soft pressed and put into one year, two year, neutral oak barrels with the balance going into a stainless tank to preserve the fresh fruit characteristics. The wine was aged for 11 months before final blending and bottling.
- Alcohol: 14%
