Y Before R, Except After Petite
When a Petite Sirah is born, it is but a young grape. Still small, still not quite one with its Syrah brethren. You see, before a Petite Sirah can have the widefound respect of being a Syrah, it must be sold a certain number of times. We think.
Like this 2009 Geyser Peak Petite Sirah. Even in its 3+ years of life, it has yet to have earned its Y, which is a shame because with a dense palate of blueberry and luscious black fruits that blend with olive and dark chocolate, you'd think that's all it needs to be a Syrah.
But that would not be. The people in charge of wine naming made a decision that a Petite Sirah is different and must be marked so with an I. Why it must go through the misery of using an I is beyond us, but we hope that by selling enough of this, things will change.
And then, just then, it will earn its Y.
(We like to think it works that way, at least, and we want to sell this stuff, so we're going to stick with that story.)

2009 Geyser Peak Winery Block Collection Petite Sirah, Walking Tree, Alexander Valley 750ml 3-Pack
Robust and hearty Petite Sirah is a classically rustic wine. Blueberry and luscious black fruits blend with olive and dark chocolate notes to form a dense palate with impressive structure and the wine finishes with a hint of peppercorn and Australian licorice. The seemingly massive tannins are well-integrated and tightly-knit making the wine easy to drink and nuanced rather than monolithic in its structure. The depth of this wine calls for hearty fare and will pair best with country cuisine such as ratatouille, braised pork ribs, and cassoulet.
Geyser Peak Block Collection wines are an expression of the unique growing conditions that exist within a handful of vineyards that consistently produce outstanding wines. Each Block Wine reflects the terroir-driven qualities of a unique site, or “block,” within the vineyard.
About the Vineyard: The Walking Tree Vineyard sits on the Western Bench of the Alexander Valley just above the historic winery. After the planting of this site in 2001 the staff was impressed by a remarkable oak tree which over time ‘walked’ from the vineyard’s edge down the steep hillside while remaining completely upright. When the tree was lost to a severe landslide during a winter storm Geyser Peak chose to immortalize it by naming the vineyard ‘Walking Tree’. The site is planted to three varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and a small plot of exceptional Petite Sirah.

Winemaker Comments: Petite Sirah gapes are hand harvested from the dramatic terraced vineyard and brought to the crush pad within minutes of the harvest. Immediate de-stemming and partial crushing of the berries but leaving a healthy percentage of whole berries minimizes the tannic impact of this variety and makes for a round, full-bodied wine. An extended cold-soak prior to the start of fermentation extracted the sweet spicy undertones from the berries and a 7 day fermentation on-skins developed the astoundingly deep color and immense structure. Eighteen months of barrel aging tamed the most aggressive of the tannins and added complex nutty notes to the abundant fruit.
