Bad Abbots

CHARDCOR3, YO.

Chardonnay dates back to some French Cistercian monks hanging out during the 1300's. Armed with that knowledge, the forthcoming dialogue may become slightly amusing!

FRÈRE YANN: Frère Anatole, thank you. What a wonderful party.

FRÈRE DAVID: Yes, it was. I very much enjoyed the gruel and oats.

FRÈRE ANATOLE: Feel free to stay longer, if you like.

FRÈRE DAVID: I’m afraid we’d best not.

FRÈRE YANN: Indeed. It’s late, and I’ve got lots of flagellatin’ to do in the morning.

FRÈRE ANATOLE: Ah, yes. Pope Benedict’s Flagellatin’ Friday. Well, I won’t keep either of you.

FRÈRE DAVID: So, Frère Anatole, it looks like we didn’t quite get to that bottle of Chardonnay I brought over.

FRÈRE ANATOLE: Oh. Were you going to want that back, Frère David?

FRÈRE DAVID: Well … you didn’t open it, is all. I thought you were going to open it tonight, but you didn’t. That’s why I brought it over, is the thing.

FRÈRE ANATOLE: Oh. I thought it was a gift of gratitude for my hospitality.

FRÈRE DAVID: Oh. I, er. Of course I’m grateful for your hospitality, Frère Anatole.

FRÈRE ANATOLE: But the wine was not a gift to demonstrate as such. You only brought it because you thought we would be drinking it tonight?

FRÈRE DAVID: I brought it to share. You know. SHARING. Maybe you read about it in some stained glass …?

FRÈRE ANATOLE: Oh, that’s pretty low, Dave. I give a lot.

FRÈRE YANN: Maybe we should -

FRÈRE DAVID: What about the time I needed to borrow that bucket, and you weren’t using the bucket, but you still wouldn’t let me borrow the bucket?

FRÈRE ANATOLE: This is not the same as the bucket incident and you know it. Besides, you’re notoriously bad with buckets. Out in the garden you’re known as ‘Frère Bucket Breaker’ because you broke Frère Horace’s bucket.

FRÈRE DAVID: We sure do have a lot of buckets.

FRÈRE ANATOLE: We sure do.

Features

2005 DuNah Tre Cuvée Chardonnay, Sonoma Coast 750ml

Floral is the first impression, then peach and passion fruit lift and carry the aroma persistently and elegantly for several seconds. The palate is defined by a beautiful mouthfeel with great front-to-back carry through built on finesse. Mid-palate emphasizes the forward acidity and flavors of heirloom yellow plums and nectarines. Back end caresses and coats the tongue and makes you want to kiss your lover!

2006 DuNah Tre Cuvée Chardonnay, Sonoma Coast 750ml

This is a cuvée made from the grapes of three vineyards using 8 clones and a careful selection of the best resulting barrel lots. It is a showcase of Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast fruit. The free-run juices underwent predominantly wild yeast fermentations in 100% French oak barrels (33% new) for 11 months with sur lies aging.

The first impression on the nose is one of fine balance between floral and fruit tones, commingling with feral and visceral scents. This evolves in the glass to spicy, toasty grilled almonds and hints of yellow tree fruits. The mouth gives deep, rich layers of textured fruit and complexity, later melding seamlessly into creamy visceral sensual pleasure. The aftertaste carries the marvelous sensual texture into the late finish.

2007 DuNah Tre Cuvée Chardonnay, Sonoma Coast 750ml

A showcase of Sonoma County fruit emanates from a skillful blending of superior barrel lots from two Russian River and one Sonoma Coast Vineyards.

Color: Light gold

Aromas: Hints of peach with an aromatic backbone of ripe Bosque pear and Gravenstein apple.

Palate: Texturally more firm than soft, with a great late aftertaste presence that persists long after the wine is swallowed. Late echoes of richness with creme brulee and a touch of butter. The wine has great structure and backbone along with its innate energy.

2008 DuNah Tre Cuvée Chardonnay, Sonoma Coast 750ml

More peach and persimmon-driven than the 2007, with ripe rich spicy aromas. Texture gives a wonderful follow-through with good balance in the acids and the tannins. On the finish, touches of lemon peel, grapefruit and white pineapple giving a long, layered textural finish uncommon in California Chardonnays.
