Features

These seven bottles represent all of the red wine that Don & Sons make.  It's an impressive collection.

2010 B Side Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 750ml

The 2010 B Side has rich aromas of dark cherry, caramel, toasted marshmallow and white pepper. Sourced from Rutherford and Stags Leap, this wine has an intensity of fruit flavor on the palate, beginning with black currant and dark plum and evolving into dark chocolate and cappuccino. Dried dark fruit and smoky oak nuances come through on the mid-palate, revealing additional layers of depth. The finish is rich with big, mouth-filling tannins and a firm core of high quality French oak.

2009 Aquinas Philosopher's Blend, Napa Valley 750ml

Crafted only in years when the  Napa Valley fruit is deemed exceptional, Philosopher’s Blend is the ultimate Aquinas wine. For the 2009 vintage, Cabernet Sauvignon was artfully blended with small amounts of Merlot and Petit Sirah, and barrel aged for 36 months. The wine opens with concentrated notes of boysenberry and dried currant complemented by cedary cigar box notes imparted by 100% French Oak. Flavors of black raspberry, dried cherry and cassis dominate with hints of dark chocolate and espresso rounding out the palate.  This full-bodied Napa Valley wine exhibits a nuanced balancing of structure and grace, depth and complexity.

2010 B Side Blend, Napa Valley 750ml

In crafting the 2010 B Side Napa Valley Red Wine Blend, winemaker Greg Kitchens used five different varietals from over seven sub-appellations. The wine opens with a heady bouquet of black cherries, dried plumbs, blackberries and peat moss. One's first sip is greeted by a flavorful cacophony of black currants, dried blueberries, and Blackstrap molasses with hints of black pepper and toasted coconut emerging on the finish. This full-bodied wine is lush and rich with finely integrated tannins, yet it also shows impeccable balance. If Cabernet Sauvignon represents the “A” side of Napa Valley, then this artfully blended wine demonstrates just how great the “B” side can be.

2011 The Crusher, Clarksburg Petite Sirah 750ml

Rich, dark aromas of blackberries, violets, and crushed white pepper invite one into this Clarksburg appellation Petite Sirah.  A jammy array of blackberry and black cherry flavors dominate the palate, complemented by hints of vanilla, sassafras, and exotic oaky notes that linger through the finish. Full-bodied, with rich mouth-filling tannins, the wine displays a multi-layered depth and complexity that invites lingered contemplation and enjoyment. This wine will pair nicely with grilled meats, savory pastas like butternut squash raviolis with a brown butter sage sauce, or even dark chocolate.

2010 Don & Sons Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 750ml

Aromas of red raspberry, rose petal, tamarind and notes of cedar unfold from this dazzling ruby-hued Pinot. Fresh crushed berries and plum dance across your tongue giving way to a bright  finish with notes of black walnut and cherries jubilee. Pair this wine with chicken enchiladas Suiza, tri-mushroom bordelaise served with rosemary flatbread. Also try chocolate dipped Madeleine’s or crepes with chocolate sauce and fresh strawberries.

2010 Project Paso Blend 750ml

The 2010 Red Blend came together slightly differently than the 2009 blend for two main reasons. While this vintage’s blend was still Grenache-driven, it had more varietals present than the previous year’s, contributing a bit more spice and fruit, and less acidity. However, the cool 2010 vintage helped balance out the acidity and left a naturally low 13.8% alcohol. Pair this wine with a barbeque chicken pizza, ravioli with marinara sauce, or carne asada soft tacos.

2005 Used Automobile Parts Dessert 374ml

This special dessert wine has medium brilliant ruby color, with a brick red hue. The very rich dark chocolate profile is underscored by orange peel, allspice, cocoa, tobacco and cherry pit with vanilla extract. The palate is sappy and generous with cassis, bourbon vanilla and over ripe plum. This wine was aged in neutral French oak barrels for 30 months.

2010 B Side Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 750ml

  • Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Appellation: Napa Valley
  • Alcohol: 13.7%
  • pH: 3.66
  • TA 0.62g/100ml

Three vineyards make up this small, distinctive vintage: the Cabernet Sauvignon comes from two separate vineyards in Rutherford and the Stags Leap District, while the remaining 10% of this wine comes from a Malbec vineyard in Rutherford. Malbec adds a burst of focused berry flavor, complementing the dark fruit flavors from the Stags Leap District and concentrated, earthy notes from the Rutherford terroir. Pair this wine with a venison tenderloin rubbed with rosemary and sea salt, or a grilled porterhouse with roasted fingerling potatoes.

2009 Aquinas Philosopher's Blend, Napa Valley 750ml

  • Varietal: Red Wine
  • Blend: 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 6% Petite Sirah
  • Appellation: Napa Valley
  • Vintage: 2009
  • Winemaker: Greg Kitchens
  • Alcohol: 13.5%
  • pH: 3.57
  • TA: 6.4 g/L
  • RS: 1.4 g/L

The 2009 vintage in Napa Valley enjoyed near ideal growing conditions for much of the season, until some early season storms hit the valley in mid-October. For the most part the vines didn’t experience much in the way of stress, with no real heat spikes or radical temperature swings to speak of.  Grapes enjoyed extended hang-time without becoming overripe developing balanced sugars and acidity levels. Wines from this vintage should be characterized by forward, bright fruit with pure varietal character.

2010 B Side Blend, Napa Valley 750ml

  • Varietal: Red Wine
  • Blend: 49% Cabernet Sauvignon,23% Merlot,16% Syrah,11% Petit Verdot,1% Cabernet Franc
  • Appellation: Napa Valley
  • Vintage: 2010
  • Winemaker: Greg Kitchens
  • Alcohol: 14%
  • pH: 3.61
  • TA: 6.4 g/L
  • RS: 3.2 g/L

Bordered by two mountain ranges, the valley stretches approximately 30 miles North to South, one mile East to West at its narrow Northern end and five miles at its widest point near the town of Napa. Its maritime climate—warm days and cool nights—coupled with deep yet not excessively fertile soils makes it ideally suited for the cultivation of premium grapes. The first grapes were planted here in 1838, and today Napa accounts for 4% of California’s total wine production, focusing primarily on the top-end of the wine market.

2011 The Crusher, Clarksburg Petite Sirah 750ml

  • Varietal: Petite Sirah
  • Blend: 76% Petite Sirah, 13% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon 3% Tinta Cao, 2% Souza, 2% Touriga Nacional
  • Appellation: Clarksburg
  • Vintage: 2011
  • Winemaker: Greg Kitchens
  • Alcohol: 13.5%
  • pH: 3.69
  • TA: 6.6 g/L
  • RS: 3.7 g/L

The Clarksburg AVA is an up and coming wine region located in California’s Sacramento Delta. Originally known for row crops like the Sugar Beet, the area was quickly discovered by grape growers attracted by a micro-climate which closely mirrored that of nearby Napa Valley. The soils here are a combination of poorly-draining clay and rich loam, meaning vines experience nutrient-rich, yet sometimes arid conditions. During the growing season, warm days give way to cooling afternoon breezes from the San Francisco Bay, dropping temperatures down 30 to 40°F from their daytime highs. This mass of cool air allows wine grapes to retain more acidity than those grown in similarly warm regions.

2010 Don & Sons  Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 750ml
  • Varietal: Pinot Noir
  • 100% Pinot Noir
  • Appellation: 87% Sonoma Coast (16% Petaluma Gap, 71% Carneros), 13% Clarksburg
  • Winemaker: Greg Kitchens
  • Alcohol: 13.9%
  • pH: 3.58
  • TA 0.63 g/100 mL

The 2010 Pinot Noir is mostly comprised of two different Sonoma Coast sub-appellations; the Petaluma Gap and Carneros regions. The wind and fog are the Petaluma Gap’s trademark.  Fruit from this cool climate adds depth and complexity to this medium-bodied Pinot Noir while the Carneros influence provides fleshy fruit notes that linger on the palate. These cooler climates help keep the grape acidity at advantageous levels to balance with the wine’s smooth, soft tannins. This is an all around crowd pleasing Pinot Noir.

2010 Project Paso Blend 750ml
  • Blend: 22% Grenache, 17% Petite Sirah, 16% Syrah, 15% Merlot, 9% Zinfandel, 8% Tempranillo, 7% Malbec, 4% Barbera, 2% Touriga Nacional
  • Appellation: Paso Robles, California
  • Vintage: 2010
  • Winemaker: Greg Kitchens
  • Alcohol: 13.5%
  • pH 3.71
  • TA 0.66 mg/L

The 2010 Red Blend begins with strawberry-infected aromas with light caramel oak. A wide variety of secondary aromas come from the different grapes in this blend: hints of spice and bramble from Merlot and Zinfandel, and light floral notes from the Grenache, Syrah, and Tempranillo. Pure, jammy fruit forms the core of the flavors on the palate, very similar to the 2009 Grenache-based blend. Grenache lends red cherry fruit flavor, complemented by wild raspberry and pomegranate from the Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, and Syrah. Hints of savory spices, coffee, white pepper, and cardamom add complexity without distracting from the fruit-forward appeal. Medium-bodied and fleshy, with a touch of fresh acidity and tannin for balance, this approachable, appealing red blend is a sure crowd pleaser.
